Mental Fitness

Thursday, February 22, 2018

Mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness. It contributes to weight control (not loss or gain), provokes motivation to make it to the starting line every morning, and sets goals. These three and others represent the effects of the core cause - the mind. Deciding on actions arises from the mind. Mental fitness makes or breaks forward motion and lends to either positivity or negativity. A negative outlook stifles and paralyzes. A positive outlook invigorates and gives impetus toward discipline.

I encountered the shock of the transition from an undisciplined childhood to the discipline of the Marine Corps for which I was not prepared. It continued to dog me for the remainder of my life as I waffled from a lack of mental fitness to create that discipline to start again. Sometimes a shock is what it takes to move us. However, shocks do not keep a person going but are temporary goads. We move in slow cycles of failing and succeeding. Both enable us to continue on and move up to that starting line every day.

Take a lesson from Winston Churchill, "We will never give up!" That is mental fitness stepping up to the starting line.
