February 8, 2018 FALSE PROPHETS

We all know when something is wrong when we hear it. Don’t we? Well, some things we do. We know when some say the world is flat; that is wrong. When others say, 2 plus 2 is 5; that is wrong. There are obvious things we hear and we know they just can’t be true. However, what we need to be mindful of are those who seem to be speaking the truth but really aren’t. There are those who are not sincere in their speaking and actions but are doing them for purely selfish gain. They are smooth talkers. They are extremely convincing. They are friendly. They are engaging. But they are setting up a trap for those who will listen so they can move others away from God. They are driven by their own selfish ways rather than God’s way.

Philippians 1:17 “Those others do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. They preach with selfish ambition, not sincerely, intending to make my chains more painful to me.” (NLT)

1. Write about a time you heard a false teacher.
2. List the things he said and did.
3. Remember to check the false preachers’ word against God’s word.
4. Be sure to call them out and share with others why his words are wrong.

Dear Lord, we pray You will help us be on guard against those who seem to be preaching Your word but they are actually distorting the truth. Remind us to verify what others say about You and Your word. Keep us safe and protect us from those who want to harm us emotionally and spiritually. Help us to be on guard for ourselves and for others who may not recognize when a false prophet is attempting to lead them down the wrong path. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

When others attempt to teach God’s word for selfish gain it hurts the credibility of all who are teaching only for God.

Some people will speak loudly so we will listen and they distract us from doing what we should do.

Some people speak softly so we become curious to what they have to say so we will stop listening to God and start listening to them.

There are many ways false teachers attempt to get to our hearts so we will focus on them and not God. We have guard our hearts.

When we stay in God’s word, connect with true godly believers, and talk with God every day, we can better recognize those who are falsely preaching His word.

Galatians 4:17 “Those false teachers are so eager to win your favor, but their intentions are not good. They are trying to shut you off from me (God) so that you will pay attention only to them.” (NLT)

We need to check everything we hear to be sure it is in line with God’s word before we believe it or take action on it.
