The air-cast question

Tuesday, January 16, 2018

Hi,
As I said earlier, I have had weak ankles for most of my life. And then in the early 90's I twisted my left ankle badly and had to go through weeks of rehab. Then, again in the early 90's, I'm positive I had a torn ACL that was undiagnosed. When I went to the hospital they only did an x-ray and nothing else. A torn ACL can't be seen with an x-ray (at least not in the 90's). However, at the time I knew nothing about torn ACL's and didn't know to tell the hospital personnel about the horrific popping sound I heard as I was down on the floor trying to get my dear cat, Michael, out of his carrier at the vet's. He had all 4 feet splayed and I had to yank and twist to get him out. That's when the loud popping sound and excruciating pain occurred. I don't know how I managed not to scream out. I don't know how I managed to get home, nor to finally drive myself to the hospital. But I did. (If it had been my right knee, I couldn't have).
Several twisting of the ankle(s) later I was given my first air-cast. (Left).
And then there's the osteopenia factor. Could that be progressing? My oncologist did tell me this week to up my calcium and Vit. D intake. (I will be getting another infusion in April).
So now I seem to be more prone to walking on the outside edge of my left foot and twisting the foot easily. Then years later I twisted my right ankle badly, more rehab, and the "matching" right ankle air-cast was "gifted" to me. Ha!
I try to analyze every problem I have. So when the severe left hip pain started, I thought perhaps it could be due to walking improperly, after twisting my ankle the week before. So out came the left air-cast. That's just me......trying to take care of myself. However, when and if no improvement continues, then I will see the doctor.
So that's the long story of the air-cast. No major problem....just "Dr. Gwen" trying to take care of herself. emoticon
Thanks for the prayers SparkFriends! I believe in prayers and they are always welcomed.

Oh Gwen...what an ordeal! It all sounds terrible and painful and going on for so long! I sure hope nothing bad is progressing and that the hip makes progress in the right direction!
When I was diagnosed with osteopenia more than 10 years ago, my dr. had recommended vibration machines. Well, you can be sure I did lots of research (found out NASA and Pro Sport Teams use them)and then I found a club that had the machines and went. Ultimately, I bought a machine for the house. I don't know if that's what's helped keep me from progressing to something more severe, but you might Google it and see if you think it's worth the investment...or at least see if you're interested ;) I don't know if any clubs near you have the machines to try out. Of course, check with your Dr. first.

Oh my, Gwen! What an experience you'd had with the ankle! Phew! When I heard you had an air cast, I got worried! Thanks for clarifying! I can see now, why you're wearing the air cast. And you're the best person to care for yourself! I always think that people know their bodies best. And we have to trust that instinct, always. And you may have had the hip pain due to the way you were walking. When the body is out of alignment, it can cause all kind of issues. I know you'll follow up with the doctor if the hip issue doesn't improve. And I would suspect that the treatments you received may also be suspect in weakening your bones. Taking extra Ca & D is a good recommendation. All in all, I'm glad you're doing well!

Keep safe & warm during your winter blast up there! And think warm thoughts........Spring will be here before you know it!
