investment stock in weight loss corporations

Just for the heck of it, I researched how lucrative it is to invest in weight loss companies not only for their admin ,but also stock holders. The number one company is Medifast, which has actually lost money this year but has a five year average of 873 percent. (So if a person had bought in at $1000, she would now have $8,730. It would be filthy lucre, like investing in cigarettes or McDonald's. Unfortunately I missed the years of greatest gains; I like to think I could make dough off them and use it to blast the diet industry and give a stipend to my humble mentor. I wonder who's on the rise now... )
This for a program that has no proof they are any more successful than anyone else, getting people to long term maintenance, which is 3-5%. There were three studies out over the last few years, all funded by guess who-Medifast-, saying there were. Two of them were headed by two employees! Nothing like unbiased observers.
As they say in Las Vegas, the house always wins.
BTW, Spark is privately owned.
