Winter 2018 5% Challenge - What a way to start the New Year!

Friday, December 29, 2017

Challenges. We all have them. Whether that be personal trials and tribulations, or those we complete with a team by our side. I’m going to talk of several here.

Personal Challenges. I have many. I have 3 children of varying intensities. My oldest daughter is 7. She’s a wonderfully intelligent little girl, but she has her… issues. Right now that issue is that she won’t go to sleep for me. Besides that, she’s got some behavioral issues. I know she’s capable of being a “good girl”, but for whatever reason, she mainly chooses to act defiantly. She’s loud and rambunctious. She basically bounces off the walls. She has a smart mouth and gives me attitude all the time. Then, there’s her sister. Another spitfire at age 4. She’s pretty much a carbon copy of her sister. She gets tired though. And when she’s tired, she’s moody. Ugh… terribly moody. Enough to make me want to rip my hair out. And you would think she would nap? Nope! Not unless she passes out in the car. But then when it’s time to get out it’s even more hell. And she won’t go back to a nap after that. She has issues with clothes. She doesn’t like to wear them. Everything is always too small/tight or too big. There is no in between. I’ve got her into size 8 underwear because they aren’t too constricting on her, but they also droop off her behind. As long as she’ll put them on to go to school, I’m just going to let it be. Then there’s my son. He’s the easy one. At 5 months, all he cares about is snuggling, wanting to play with his sisters, and eating. Today, he shared a slice of peanut butter pie with me. Obviously I’m not intimidated by the possibilities of allergies. By all means, he can have all the foods, and be exposed to everything. I’m going on the belief that it’s just strengthening his immune system. Right now he’s teething which is fun… we’ve had many a sleepless night lately and I just can’t wait for these little buggers to pop their way through. So I’m a stay at home mom and these 3 darlings are my life. And my husband. Sometimes I feel like I’m just his personal chef and chauffeur though. The good news about the chef thing… he’ll actually eat whatever I cook and rarely complain. Constructive criticism from him really, and he’s entitled to that. The kids… ugh… if only they could eat with such little complaint. My aunt is another challenge I deal with. She seems to think that she’s another parent to my children and has an awful habit of usurping my authority. Probably… no, most definitely, where those behavior issues come from. And if I happen to say anything to her, she throws her own little tantrum. Somehow, we managed to squeak by without one of those tonight. All these little challenges add up to one big challenge. STRESS! I have a lot of it. Oh, and I’m also bipolar, which complicates things because I’m not always stable and can act a little impulsively. Nope, nope… not a great combination. These are the things that pretty much shape my life. My life is not all my own because I have others relying on me. And then we come here… to Sparkpeople, and not that I’m complaining, but I’m a team leader here, so that’s even more people relying on me. I’m not sure how I managed to do that exactly… that impulsivity I guess, but alas, here we are. I’m falling apart and I’m a mess, and I’m trying my best to be a support system to everyone I can possibly help.

Ah… and health wise there are some challenges. I’m obese. Okay, that’s a fact more than a challenge. And to be honest, I’m okay with it. But I also have several herniated discs, pinched nerves, osteoarthritis in my neck, and just all over pain that none of my doctors seem to be able to pinpoint a cause for. Oh, and these fantastic migraines.

This brings me to that team challenge I was talking about earlier. The Winter 5% Challenge! I’m an extra leader for the Weight Warriors. (Seriously, what was I thinking???) It’s all coming up in about a week. So I need to be ready for this challenge and all that goes with it. I need to be ready for the New Year! I need goals! I need a plan! I need to be able to form a coherent thought!

So let’s get started on this checklist here…

Fitness Plan
I’ll be honest, I SUCK at this part. I never seem to be able to find time for me so I find fitness very challenging. But I know I need a plan. And I know it needs to contain both cardio and strength.

So here’s what I plan…
A MINIMUM of 10 fitness minutes a day! I will include any intentional exercise in this.
Ideally, 30 minutes of cardio 3 days a week.
10 minutes of strength training 5 days a week rotating between upper body, lower body, and core.
A MINIMUM of 5k steps daily as counted by my fitbit.

To hold all that together, I know I function best on 8 full hours of sleep a night. (Please let the teething end soon!)

2) Nutrition Plan
I will do my darndest to actually utilize the Sparkpeople Nutrition Tracker. I haven’t had the best track record with that lately. That said, there’s no particular “diet” that I follow. Moderation is key for me. My plan is to eat when I’m hungry, not when I’m not. Lord, grant me the strength to not stress eat. Heaven knows that I do way too much!
I will work on keeping my weekly meal plan. I had been doing really well up until the holidays. Hopefully I can get back in the groove sooner than later! Anyone have some healthy child friendly meals since the kids like to complain that the food I make is disgusting?
Shopping gets done on a weekly basis.
I’ve been working on getting my kitchen into order. It isn’t yet, but it’s getting closer!

3) ---Page has been updated and look! I’m even writing a blog!

4) Win Today! - I’m working on this. Generally my day starts at 7am with breakfast and coffee and taking my kids to school. I lunch at noon before picking up daughter #2 from school, drop off hubby at work, then pick up daughter #1 from school. By the time we get home it’s time for me to start making dinner and helping with homework. Dinner is usually around 5pm, although earlier on Wednesdays to accommodate for dance class, and I personally prefer to be asleep by 9pm

5) Win Tomorrow! - Another thing I need to work on. I always start with the best intentions. I meal plan at the very least, and usually that goes well. Sometimes I even remember to get my clothes together before I go to bed.

6) 10 Reasons I want to be healthy
Um… just to be healthy, duh.
For my kids - to be able to keep up with them and their shenanigans
For my husband - cuz I’m sure he’d like his sexy wife back… or at least my buns a little tighter
To be pain free. I don’t know if my excess weight is the cause of my pain, but I know it sure doesn’t help.
To lessen my migraines.
To have less stress. All those little health problems add up on your mind.
To spend less time at the doctor’s (and less money on co-pays)
To fit easily in the rides at the amusement park… ya know, the ones I’m not supposed to go on anyway because my back’s busted the way it is.
I want hooker boots!! Seriously, can’t I find a cute pair of boots that will zipper over my calf? Of course this has always been an issue thanks to muscular calves, but now their even bigger thanks to the layer of flub over the muscle.
To just be able to enjoy the rest of my life!

7) Triggers and Red Light Foods

My triggers - My kids and my aunt, or rather the stress they cause me
Plan - ? Honestly, I don't know. Unfortunately it's nothing I can exactly remove from my life.
My positive behaviors - I take my medications regularly. While it may not get rid of the stress, it does help me handle it a little better.

Honestly, I don’t feel like I really have any Red Light foods. It’s not the foods that hold the power over me.

8) 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past.
1) Family
2) Pregnancy
3) Laziness

Write a strategy for each one to keep yourself on track for 8 weeks.
1) Include family in fitness activities and have them help with the healthy meal plan
2) Hubby had a vasectomy… this can no longer be an issue
3) Not be! I need to actually listen to my fitbits reminders to “go for a stroll”

9) Intentional Exercise
Work harder, not smarter! More walking trips to and from the car, parking farther away at the store (weather permitting)
More elbow grease when cleaning!

10) I took the quiz before… It said I was prepared then. I’m exhausted and need sleep and don’t feel the need to requiz now when not much has changed. I think I might be even more prepared now. I mean… I just formulated words onto a computer screen, and that’s more than I think I would have been capable of a few days ago.

I will complete the rest of the countdown activities someday this weekend. (Pictures and measurements and finding those magic numbers).

If I don’t post again before the New Year, I hope it’s a safe and happy one for you all. I know I will be enjoying a seafood dinner with my family on New Year’s Eve, with champagne and sparkling juice toasts at midnight (if I manage to stay awake that long), and our traditional Pork & Sauerkraut for dinner on New Year’s Day.
