Sparking Through December

Years ago I belonged to a gym that set up a holiday challenge from Halloween to Christmas. When we worked out at the gym we got stars on a chart, just like elementary school! We could also monitor other things, like weight and calories. At the end we got a t-shirt and the top achievers got an award.

I was never The Winner, but I found that simple star chart incredibly motivating. When I participated I usually lost or maintained my weight and had plenty of energy. Every since then I think of the holidays, especially December as a great time to get fit.

It’s a paradox, right, because there is so much rich food around and so many food events? What I learned was that it was kind of cool as well to have so many opportunities to focus on and practice good habits. Every time I walked by the office “cookie collection” I had a chance to say no. I learned to get outside during lunchtime too, to walk AND get away from the constant flow of rich food in my office. I also think regular exercise cut way down on the stress of holiday shopping and decorating. I kept a bit of perspective.

Spark has great trackers so I don’t so much need a big chart to keep on track anymore. But instead of thinking of this as the season of ruinous eating, I see it as the season of opportunity to practice, practice, practice healthy living.
