Call me Yorkie!
Sunday, October 22, 2017
Because I'm hanging out in the bustling city of York, Pennsylvania for the next two to three weeks for work, not because I've taken a turn for the canine worse (or would that be better?).
Basically, I sent out an e-mail at 1:50 PM on Wednesday, and by 5:10 PM, I'd signed a form agreeing to come out to Pennsylvania. Talk about good timing, talk about instant gratification!
When I talked to the recruiter that afternoon, she indicated that I might be traveling the very next day, or maybe on Friday. But when I got contacted by the HR compliance department, they said I needed to do a TB test, which takes 2-3 days to complete. So I got the injection portion of that test Thursday morning, and thought I might not fly out until Sunday. Except I get a call about 3 PM Thursday, asking when I was arriving in PA. Given that the travel department hadn't given me a sign in for the travel website, which made me unable to choose a flight, it very much wasn't something I could do anything about, especially as there wasn't a flight from Detroit to Harrisburg available that evening (if there was, I would have been on it). Instead, I was on a flight Friday morning, and in a clinic that afternoon.
Given the compressed timeline, it's not too weird that all the paperwork wasn't in place up front. I've been sending over 1 or 2 documents a day to satisfy the requirements. I think I'm at the end of them now. Finally!
They've put me up in a hotel that doesn't have kitchen facilities, so I won't get to cook for myself. I've been eating out so far, but also went touristing at the Pennsylvania State Capitol (#14/50), and the Gettysburg National Military Park, walking a good bit, so I suspect I'm even for the weekend. Have to figure out how to be good over the course of the week.
Gettysburg was a very moving experience. You send a person like me to a place an hour away from what was truly a turning point in American history, that's going to be the first thing on my agenda, and so that's where I headed Saturday morning, spending 8 hours out there. I could have spent another 8, easily.
