Living with Diabetes

Thursday, October 12, 2017

It has been a while since I have posted on Spark People. Recently I have been struggling with some of the health issues associated with Diabetes.

1. Diabetic macular edemia--in late June I woke up to partial vision in my left eye. Did I go see my eye doctor immediately? No, I waited until mid-July because I had a vacation coming up. He sent me to see a retina specialist which diagnosed macular edemia. I now go to the retina specialist and get an injection into my eye every 6-8 weeks. I have regained my vision in this eye.

2. I chose to go to an Endocrinologist who added another medication and sent me to diabetic counseling courses. In those courses I have learned the following:

a. Out of control blood sugar causes you to be tired.
b. High blood pressure causes your sugar to rise.
c. Stress causes your sugar to rise
d. Lack of exercise causes your sugar to rise.
e. Being overweight causes your sugar to rise.

3. What can I control?

a. Stress...I have to work and love my job so I cannot leave it. However I just removed myself from several positions I was holding in an organization that was causing me a great deal of stress. I have also started saying "NO" to other people.

b. Exercise--I control whether or not I get exercise. The solution is to schedule my exercise so that I do not miss the opportunity. My fit bit will vibrate to remind me to get moving. A co-worker has offered to walk around the building with me each time this happens.

c. Food choices--I am the one who does the shopping and prepares our meals. I can decide to stock the house with the right types of food and snacks.

d. Tracking--I am already tracking my blood sugar and can add what I eat in the tracking. I am tracking carbs.

The most important thing I can do for myself is choose me and put myself first. This is something that is difficult for me to do because I have always put others first.

Sorry, portion of protein is 7g. I do not have diabetes but came across book. It could be a huuuge game changer.

Something that might prove useful that is working for from a life changing book, insulin resistant diet...balancing carbs w protein. Portion of carbs is 7g, carbs 15. Do not exceed 30g carb per meal, thus balanced w 14g protein.
