Some Calorie Surprises

Sunday, October 08, 2017

Some foods can really surprise us with the number of calories they contain.

Here are a couple that I found interesting:

1 tablespoon maple syrup = 53 calories
1 cup maple syrup - 819 calories

1 teaspoon sugar = 16 calories
1 cup sugar = 773 calories

1 tablespoon whipped cream = 8 calories
1 cup whipped cream - 154 calories

I am just thinking of all those times I pour out the syrup onto French toast - maybe half a cup, maybe more!

I hardly ever eat pancakes, but from now on, if and when I eat them, I will put whipped cream on top, rather than maple syrup. Even with sugar included, the whipped cream will contain far fewer calories than the syrup.

And... the blood sugar level will not be as impacted by the whipped cream as it is by maple syrup.

I'll have to find some good recipes for whole wheat pancakes, or pancakes with ricotta cheese, perhaps. I may even add some walnuts to them.
