Problem Identified

Saturday, October 07, 2017

So… this week I got an MRI to see what’s happening with my neck which has been hurting since May. And yes, it showed the cause. I have a bulging disc which is causing the pain. Also some arthritis. I am pretty bummed. Not sure whether my swimming and biking for triathlon training caused the problem, but I think they made it worse. I’m not doing either now, and am back to running only for cardio. I’m doing more yoga (twice a week) and working on adding strength training to my plan. I’m planning on signing up for a 5k Thanksgiving Turkey Trot and put together a training plan that has 3-4 days of running, ST and some cross-training. I think that will help me stay on track - I’m SO much better with both eating and exercise when I have a goal.

The good news is that I found a chiropractor who also has PT as a part of his practice, and I had a diagnostic appointment with him last week. Next week, I’ll see him again and we’ll start a treatment regimen. I like him… he seems very responsive and also careful. And he sees no reason why I shouldn’t be able to do triathlons again (of course, he doesn’t know about the bulging disc yet). In any case, I am looking forward to it.

Life is pretty good other than that. Work is stressful, but I am weighing my options, looking around to whether there might be other opportunities for me, and that helps me feel like I have more control. And my son is getting married in early November! We are all very excited about that. I’ve been working my Beck plan and having reasonable success in staying on track last week and this week, and when I have fallen off, it hasn’t been major overeating. So that feels good. Managing stress and not getting discouraged is key.

Wishing a happy weekend to all my Sparkling friends!

I’m sorry to hear about your bulging disk. It’s never a good feeling to have an official diagnosis. On the other hand, it often allows for a specific treatment plan and time frame for recovery. I hope your chiropractor & PT help you feel better soon!

So sorry about the neck and arthritis problems. Good to have a dx and a treatment plan . . . but having just recovered from a broken foot, I know how disconcerting an injury is.

Your chiropractor sounds like he'll be able to help: one of my work colleagues is getting a lot of relief from neck problems through chiropractic treatment.

Oh so very sorry to read about your pain. I have had huge success with PT and I hope whatever kind of body work you choose will help your condition. When one is in pain though it can be hard to envision getting past it. Sounds like your approach is exactly the right path.
