For a few years I have been wanting to go on a bike ride from my house to the lake. It is all rail trail so I wouldn't have to worry about traffic, which I loathe. The ride would be 123 km or for you Americans 76 miles round trip. I have done long rides before but never over 100 km and never by myself.
When my 40th Birthday came this summer I planned to do it but my family (mom, dad, sister, niece) ended up coming down for the day to celebrate with me which was nice but it was a such a beautiful day I wished I'd spent it riding.
A few weeks pass, work was really busy and I didn't have a full day to devote to the adventure. Then I got a flu and it's hung on for 3 full weeks! This week I was finally feeling better and had a day where the weather looked good. I was going to do it.
When I went to be last night my nose was full and I had to breathe through my mouth. I woke up a couple times in the night coughing (stupid, lingering cold
). I wondered how I'd feel in the morning.
This morning I woke up unsure. What if I have to call someone to pick me up? I thought. I'm still sick I shouldn't go, I told myself. I really want to do this before the weather gets cold, you're doing it! I told myself.
So I did!
I made a playlist for the ride of some pumping tunes and after I got the kids off to school I loaded up my water and gear and set off. I rode the whole way there and only stopped once to fill water and eat a quick snack. On the way there last 10 km/6 miles seemed long but other than that the ride was pleasant.
When I got to my destination I had lunch at a restaurant on the beach, coffee, fish tacos and heavily salted french fries (humidex of 35C, I needed the salt). I didn't quite finish the fries because I was pretty full and didn't want to feel sick on the way home.
The way home felt even better than the way there, which is a little weird. I expected to feel really tired but that wasn't the case at all. Maybe the lunch choice was a good one, or maybe I was just happy to finally be on my way to completing a goal.
The last 10 km on the way home are the toughest because there are some pretty good hills but today I crushed them!
Total distance - 123 km or 76 miles
Total ride time - 5 hours 40 minutes
Total calories burned (Garmin with HRM) - 2000 even (odd but true)
Lunch Cost - $25 with tip
Feeling of accomplishment - Priceless!!
