hi-posting later than normal--I had a 7 am dentist appt. which means I have to get up at 5-ish and leave the house at 6. which then means that I wake up at TWO and keep checking the clock until 5 (I hate alarm clocks). anyway--all was well even though I had to drive the hour it takes to get there through really dense fog. I know the way very well, but managed to almost miss 2 different turns because I couldn't see them coming!
mr. Wilson the rooster is better--I had a little hen who I wasn't sure about so I put her in the little henhouse with him just in case--and he is crowing again, and eating and seems a lot happier. I am going to keep them separated a little longer just for safety's sake. whatever was wrong seems to have been pretty minor and self limiting.
got a new pottery book that I decided to use to copy all the different pieces in it. it's a design book and I figure copying all of the designs will help teach me a lot of possibilities. my creativity doesn't stem from creating new things, but from synthesizing things I learn into different combinations that are not new elements, but a new way of using the elements. so I am learning the elements now. Monday I threw 8 mugs out of a really pretty speckled brown stoneware--it's a clay I really love. Tuesday I used a white stoneware that is very loose and forgiving (the technical word is "plastic") and made 4 pitchers. I learned quickly that it isn't a good clay for this purpose because it is easy to pull it too thin, and when I went to shape the spouts, two of them were so thin the clay tore. but yesterday when I was handling all the mugs (again I copied all of the author's handle forms and placement) I cut the messed up spouts off and made new spouts and joined them--and I am happy with how they turned out. today I handle the pitchers and start working on glazing (my BIG nemesis). right now it's time to start laundry and make lunch. have a great day!
