Thoughts upon ending my Spark Break

Since joining Spark in 2006 I've lost more weight than I've ever lost before (40 lbs) and kept most of it off longer than I've ever done before. I lost that 40 pounds slowly over a year, reaching goal in early 2008.

Over the years life got in the way and being an emotional eater I ate back about 12 pounds of the 40 I lost. I've been trying to lose some of that regained weight for quite a while now. I lose a few, relax my efforts and regain it. Frustrating.

I'm beginning to think that this is where my bod wants to be. Not my choice, but I always return to this weight. Age (I'm now 66), slower metabolism, chronic pain issues. I'm sure they all contribute to the struggle. Should I concede and just work on not gaining? I have a hard time with that one. But I need to remind myself of how far I've come -

Lost weight and have kept most of it off
Changed the way I eat – I now eat more fruits and veggies than ever before, in fact, most days I only eating fruits, veggies and grains, and rarely eat meat (only the occasional chicken, turkey or fish).
I exercise most days of the week. I can't exercise long or hard due to chronic pain, but I do what I can, breaking up my exercise sessions into 2-3 each day, for a total of at least 30 minutes a day. Plus strength exercises twice a week.

It's not about being skinny. It's about being in control of my health. It's about aging healthfully. Disease prevention. Making better food choices. Moving. Exercising regularly. All of those things are more important than a number on the scale. That's what I should focus on.

Right now, there's room for improvement - I still need to work on my snack choices. I like my sweets too much. My meal choices are usually good. Yesterday was a typical day –

Breakfast – baked apple oatmeal with almond milk
Lunch – "salad" (black beans, tomatoes, shredded carrots, cheddar cheese, Russian dressing)
Dinner – veg sloppy joes (kidney beans, cannellini beans, diced tomatoes, carrots, BBQ sauce) on 1 slice wheat bread, 1 slice Swiss cheese
Snacks – Yasso frozen yogurt, lemon Greek yogurt with a little whipped cream

I'm making good meal choices, and always have healthy snacks on hand. But my sweet tooth kicks in a little too often and I give in to it WAY too often and always go overboard. I need to keep making those healthy choices and really FOCUS on my snack habits and not let my sweet tooth take over and sabotage those healthy meals.

I can do this, I know I can.
