July 28, 2017 PRACTICE WHAT WE PREACH

We may not be preachers but we often give advice to others. How many times do we tell others they should keep dwelling on the bad and continue to worry about things that bring them down? Probably never. But that is what we do to ourselves.

Many times, when we are discouraged, we think about how terrible we are. We wonder why things have to happen to us. When we sink into depression, we reach for something in this world that will bring us temporary comfort and we forget about God. However, when others are down and out, we tell them to keep their chin up, to trust God and to pray. We tell them to think about the positive things in life. We tell them to be grateful for what they do have. When we get down and out, why aren’t we practicing what we preach to them? Why aren’t we focusing on being grateful to God and doing what we tell others to do?

SCRIPTURE:
1 Timothy 4:12 “Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.” (NLT)

ACTION STEPS:
1. List something you are discouraged about.
2. Write down what you have done to get over it.
3. Pray asking God to show you how to better focus on Him.
4. Turn your focus off the problem and put your hope and trust in God.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, help us to remember how You tell us to be grateful in all things. You want our thoughts and words to be pleasing to You. You want us to lift others up and encourage them but You also want us to be kind to ourselves. Help us, when we get discouraged, to remember You love us and You have a grand plan for us. Help us to remember we shouldn’t beat ourselves up but read Your word and pray so we will be encouraged to continue on. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

REMEMBER:
God wants us to be grateful in all things. He wants us to remember our blessings so we won’t be discouraged.

Our thoughts and words should be pleasing to God. That means we don’t talk negatively about ourselves.

If we commit our lives to God and trust in Him, He will help us when we get discouraged.

Psalm 37:5 “Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.” (NLT)

When we give in to temptation, God wants us to know we can quickly turn back to Him and repent so we can continue on the path He has created for us.

FOCUS:
Luke 22:46b “Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.” (NLT)

Prayer helps us focus on God rather than the problem.
