My night in the hospital

Monday after a particularly stressful day at work I came home to an even more stressful night at home. Hubby was being very unsupportive at a time when I needed it most. So at about 10 pm my heart started to race & wouldn't slow down . So off to the hospital we went. By the time we got there, about 25 minutes, it had slowed significantly but wasn't back to normal yet. Had an EKG in the ER & was seen quickly by the dr. After blood work & being hooked up to the EKG monitor for several hours the dr decided I would be admitted for a 24 hour observation. During that time I was poked for blood several times, while still hooked to EKG machine.

Fortunately the only thing they found wrong with my blood work was I had a low potassium level. The drs concluded the cause of my symptoms Were the low potassium level & the anxiety attack I had . This is the second time this year this has happened to me. The first time I had a complete cardiac work up which showed I had a healthy heart. My internist will be monitoring my potassium & I have got to find a way to control my stress levels. Feeling better now but still feeling weak & exhausted from the ordeal.

    It is good your heart is okay, but I am so sorry to hear you went through this. It had to be really scary, which just makes you more anxious, which makes the symptoms worse.

    What a scare! Guess bringing up potassium level can be done both naturally and via supplement.
    As far as controlling stress goes, my go to is daily yoga, the slow relaxing kind. Also, getting out hiking or walking and immersing yourself in some green stuff (as in trees, woods, forest) is very therapeutical.

    So sorry you had such a rough night. It can be hard to get enough potassium, but with just a little work, you can find a list of foods that you make sure to eat one of every day that will increase your intake. I am sad you felt you didn't get support from your hubby, as that probably made everything a lot worse. But peace comes from inside us, not from someone else. Maybe there is a way to work on your stress levels? Getting at least almost enough sleep most of the time, taking just a few minutes to settle and clear my thoughts before I allow my day to take off at full speed, and the ability to say "no" when I'm asked to do more than is possible in a day (sometimes even saying no to myself, as I try to pile on more "to-dos") are all strategies that have helped me feel calmer inside. Maybe they will help you, too. emoticon

    Very frightening. A low potassium will definitely help the cause of a rapid heart rate. Try some meditation for your stress and use so soft, meditative music. I find this helps a lot! Take care and keep in touch with your Dr.

    Virtual hugs to you! Ask your doctor if coconut water is a good source of potassium for you. It's much better for you than a "sports drink". Another good source is bananas. I like banana coconut smoothies! Stress is a killer. We need to look within..
