Perception

Thursday, July 13, 2017

I went to the gym today. Before I started my cardio, I was in a strength exercise room just for women. I had heard a woman talking to an elderly lady. (I later found out that she is 83 and in awesome shape) The elderly woman went on to a workout class. The younger woman entered the room, where I was. We were the only two women present. I asked her what was wrong. She said that she was so depressed over her appearance. What I saw was a fit woman. I didn't see any flaws. She said that she is 46 (I am 62) and she didn't feel pretty anymore. I sincerely spoke to her about what I saw....I saw a woman in great shape. I saw a woman that did not look 46, in fact, she looked 10 years younger. She said but look at my neck and my wrinkles. I was just so shocked that she felt that way. None of what she said was true. She told me the 83 year old woman was in disbelief, just as I was, that she felt that way. I spoke to her and told her that she was being very hard on herself. It is so unfortunate that our looks seem so much more important. She is married and has two healthy children. Why should she not enjoy this time of her life. I know that if we were not in this era of skinny being beautiful and cosmetic surgeries, we would be a much more confident society. It really hurts me to see people think that looks mean more than character or personality.

I've got past that, actually never had it. At this age, I just want everything to work, and not break down. I've seen a surgeon's knife 2-3 times now in my last 2 years, not for cosmetic surgery. Curse you gall bladder, away with you! I don't miss it...

That's rough...to encounter someone who is so unhappy with such a great life and body. I hope that she sees the light soon and I applaud you for taking the time to counsel her. Hope you have a great day! Keep up the good work! Thanks for the encouragement! Spark on! emoticon emoticon

Thank you for taking the time to talk with the young looking 40 something lady. I surely hope with two ladies telling her she looked wonderful, and younger than her age got her to thinking that she does look fine. I wouldn't count on it, but hope it made her day that she did get the compliments.

I'm happy you took time talking to that lady. It is very sad that we as a society see the outside package as being so important. DH and I were just talking about how it is so unfortunate that so many people judge others by the way they look alone. It took me actually getting wrinkles and grey hair to realize that they don't matter a fig! What is important is the way I feel and the way I act! Same for any other person! I hope she takes your remarks to heart and thinks about what she *is* and not so much about what she looks like!

Great blog! It is sad that outside appearance has become so important that we ignore the beauty inside

I think many of us cannot see what others see. I know I see the beauty in others so much easier than I can find the beauty in the mirror.

I really have to make an effort not to be so hard on myself and to give myself the same kindness I naturally extend to others. I'm glad you were there to talk to this woman...it's probably just what she needed to hear, and maybe it will make her think of herself differently.

Often times it is harder to deal with our insides than it is to deal with our outsides. Nice work.

It takes so long to appreciate our bodies for all they do for us. No wonder we have so many kids with body dysmorphia problems. Bless that poor woman's heart. may she see herself as you did.

Wow! looks can be enhanced, but feeling good, positive and serving humanity comes from within. Unfortunately, too much time on our hands and selfish behavior is becoming the norm. It's all about, me, Me, ME! How sad!

I remember my mother feeling bad about herself until I reminded her of how pretty her white hair was.

It's great you were able to tell her positive things..but now she has to be positive about herself & BELIEVE it!!

That is so very sad :-( Two people telling her she looks great should be enough to let her know she really does. We are quite often our own worst enemies. So many pick ourselves apart and cut ourselves down which makes weight loss so difficult. If you can't love and accept yourself why would you bother looking after yourself.
Good on you for trying to get her to see the light. Wrinkles are just a sign of a skin that has been lived in!

Seems like girls learn from an early age to try to be what they are not, and to never be satisfied with what they do have, so sad!

So sad. But I see it all the time. Hair is a big one. Why do so many people dye their hair? The fake colors look hideous and their natural color is so lovely. That includes grey hair, which is a crown of glory, not something to be disguised and hidden.

Great job connecting and motivating another woman. Being a woman is hard. We get a thought in our head and no one can convince us otherwise.

That's the mindset that has caused an explosion in cosmetic surgery by even very young women. Very sad
