Countdown to My Second Triathlon!

Monday, July 10, 2017

The weeks have been flying by lately, and I've only been checking in on Spark to say hi to friends and catch up... no time to blog, life has been busy!

I am still (for the most part) on track with eating (although the 4th of July holiday week was a major exception to that – I am finally almost back to where I was pre-holiday but it was not easy! With both my boys and their respective girlfriend and fiancée visiting, it was an awesome time… but I cooked non-stop and I guess I ate non-stop too. There were some days when I stayed on my Beck planning and tracking and other days where I only tracked at the end of the day, and it is clear to me that pre-deciding – even if I went off track a bit – produces better results. At any rate, I am moving in the right direction. I said I was going to go slowly this time and I am clearly keeping that promise!

Training for my second triathlon has been great. I’ve been doing a lot of reading and learning about endurance sports, and have worked hard to incorporate more intensity into my training, with good results. I am getting (slowly) both faster and stronger. At the same time, I’ve been careful about injury prevention… if it hurts more than just a little bit, I stop. Period. Adding cycling and swimming has been great. I found a Masters swimming coach who also does open water swim clinics and am looking forward to joining the Masters group this fall. I am sure I have tremendous room for improvement in my swimming, if I can learn better technique. Between adding swimming and biking to my workouts, and losing some of my excess weight, I am reducing the wear and tear on my knees… and they are happier for it already!

My next triathlon is Saturday, and my training program calls for only minimal workouts this week. I know some who can’t stand the taper, as it is called, but it doesn’t seem to bother me. Look forward to yoga and gentle stretching to make sure I am in the best possible shape on Saturday. The race is a few hours from where I live, so we decided to do a beach weekend after. A great reward!

Hope all of my Sparkling friends are doing well. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy week!
