It's Official: I'm a 2nd Degree Black Belt
Monday, June 26, 2017
Holy cow. My belt now has two embroidered stripes, one for each degree. Wow.
Getting a black belt is like graduating from high school: you're now ready for advanced college-like training. Getting a second degree? That's like the college graduation...and I did it. I'm still shell-shocked.
Aside from the usual testing requirements, I had an added personal challenge: I tested with my husband. He is an absolute taekwondo rock star. He's six feet tall and 150 pounds of pure muscle, and he can perform any feat with deadly elegance. He earned his 5th degree this weekend, officially a Master in the art.
Not intimidating at all, right?
So my shades of doubt in the last few weeks have come from this unnatural comparison with my husband -- which is totally irrational, I know, But sometimes it's hard -- when you weigh more, when you're slower, when your kicks are nowhere near as powerful -- sometimes it's hard to give yourself any credit. So I'm trying to right now.
I earned a 2nd degree black belt. On my own. With my own body. I performed every task I was given with no errors. I was able to jog two miles in 21 minutes, defend against five different attacks, kick through two one-inch boards stacked on each other, and spar several five-minute rounds without getting exhausted or beaten. (Now that I write it down, I'm feeling a lot better!) I will never perform like my rock-star husband, for whom taekwondo is the blood and sweat of his life, but that's okay. I'm pretty bada$$ on my own.
