Are some days of the week harder for you to stick to a healthy plan than others? How do you cope?
Thursdays are tricky for me. It’s the one day of the week when I’m eating dinner on my own. The other days I eat dinner with my husband, and I try to plan something healthy for us. He is naturally thin (and has weighed the same since his college days), and he loves vegetables. We always have some form of protein and at least one veggie; sometimes two or three. Sometimes a carb, but not always. On Thursdays evenings, hubby has plans after work; I don’t see him until late in the evening, and I’m on my own for dinner.
So on Thursdays it’s tempting to treat myself. I’m always drawn to something quick and easy, like my favorite food…fried chicken from a local grocery store that I can pick up while I’m there getting groceries. Or some take out Chinese food. For just myself, I don’t take the time to cook an entire meal, and I like the idea of no dishes to clean up!
I also think of Thursday evenings as “me time.” I do things I enjoy, like watch TV to catch up with favorite shows (on-demand with cable). I work on a puzzle while I watch TV. Certainly not burning many calories doing those things.
But I need to rethink Thursdays, as I feel like I’m undoing a lot of the good efforts I accomplish the rest of the week. The scale is going in the wrong direction, and I think Thursdays is a big part of my problem.
So that’s why I thought I’d blog about it…as a reminder to myself that Thursday isn’t my “free to cheat” day, but more like my “free will” day, and I can choose to make it a healthy day if I want to. And really, I’d feel better on Friday if I made it a healthier day, as a lot of time the foods I would eat on a Thursday don’t agree with me, even if they do taste good!
So…my plan for today:
Dinner: I’ve planned a turkey burger, with some sautéed onions and mushrooms on the side, and a salad. That should be filling, and it’s only one pan to wash, so not bad. I bought a bag of prewashed romaine lettuce that has carrots and red cabbage with it, so it will be convenient to have a ready-made salad.
Exercise: I remembered I have an balance ball, so I plan to dust that off and pump it up. I’ll balance on it while I watch my TV shows, and do some stretches and exercises during commercials.
