Remembering on Mother's Day

Saturday, May 13, 2017

"Even as a small child, I understood that women had secrets, and that some of these were only to be told to daughters. In this way we were bound together for eternity."

―Alice Hoffman

My mother passed away in 1992 of breast cancer. I have looked back many times, through the years, and regretted not appreciating her more than I did when I was young. However, having two grown daughters of my own, I understand that this is common. My mother was religious and strict. She was the disciplinarian. My father was the easy going parent.

As I have reached 62, I do know that as much as I hated the spankings, the conflicts... I cannot change the past. I can only accept the way it was. But I do know that being a mother is the hardest job I have found.

Do you reflect on memories of Mother's Days in past? If so, do you ever imagine the memories that our children will have of us in future years?

"I will never forget the moment your heart stopped and mine kept beating."

I hope that you all have a special mother, step mother or grandmother and enjoy your weekend.

Thank you so much for sharing! (I am very tardy in my response!)

My daughter, being an outspoken adult now, tells me exactly what she thought/now thinks of her childhood. From all reports the things I did "right" far outweigh the things I did "wrong." Being a mother herself now has changed her point of view on many of the things she resented that I did now that she knows exactly how far you'll go to try and protect your children! I am very fortunate that my daughter and I have that kind of open relationship because I don't have to wonder! It was an awesome Mother's Day for me even though I did not get to see DD as she is busy getting ready to move. She sent me an awesome text which brought happy tears to my eyes and I sent one to her that I hope did the same!

My mother has been gone these 12 years and while I took care of her more than she took care of me, I have some very fond memories of her and I take them out quite frequently to enjoy them.

You can never go back and have a re-do, nor will you live long enough to make amends for everything - that is the human condition. We do our best and when we know better we do better.

So very sorry you lost your Mother to breast cancer :-(( So many lives lost to that.
I am fortunate my Mother is still alive in spite of that cancer running in her family. My sister and I are spending the weekend with her at her place. Its nice when my sister can make it in from the farm. Between her full time janitor job, farm chores and babysitting her grandchild, she rarely has time to come in. I am lucky my Mother had no religious affiliation and was relaxed in her parenting. But she had to work three jobs as a single parent to raise three kids so not a lot of choice. I got my first house key at age 7, so we grew up pretty independent. Special moments were when the four of us could get together on special occasions.
    My thoughts are with you,

Yes, often I wonder what my kiddos will remember of me! I think all in all being a Mom means making mistakes, but also doing SOME things right. Thank goodness.

HUGS and what a loving tribute to your Mom.

My own Mom has Alzheiemer's disease, and each day is different and challenging. But she is still that loving, nurturing Mom I remember growing up. That's a gift and I will treasure it.
