Triathlon Training: Counting Down…

My triathlon is a week from tomorrow!

Two weeks ago, I got a little bug and my training suffered. I missed 4 workouts and then for some reason wasn’t paying close attention and didn’t step up my distance in swim and run as much as I should have. When I realized that, I got myself back on track and increased my length, and I can feel my fitness increasing after the past week. I did two days of swimming 1200 yards and running 3 miles, and also managed to get in a 12 mile early morning bike ride which was great. I did a bike/run brick today (and yes, my legs did feel like bricks) and will do a 15 mile long ride tomorrow.

Training for this triathlon has brought it home to me how much my fitness has decreased over the past months. I knew I wasn’t doing what I needed to do, but didn’t realize just how much my fitness had suffered. When I started training even moderately, it wore me out. Now that I’ve been pushing myself harder over the better part of 8 weeks, I feel like I am just starting to get back to a place of strength. I like feeling that I have great endurance – one of the reasons I choose to challenge myself by doing half marathons and ten mile races – so it feels great to be getting back in shape. Another benefit is that I’m shedding some pounds, now that I seem to have found the right balance in fueling and nutrition.

I’m pretty excited and looking forward to next week. In the meantime, we are busy, with my younger son and his girlfriend coming over for Mother’s Day tomorrow, meeting the girlfriend’s mother when she is visiting next weekend (wonder what that means?!) and my older son and my mother coming for a long weekend over Memorial Day weekend. I ‘m so excited to have everyone over to enjoy our new home and neighborhood. We’re loving it!
