Thanks for the Memories

Thursday, April 20, 2017

A few years ago I was volunteering at the local Senior Center. Someone there had suggested that the director get in touch with me to help out the singing group since they knew I was part of my church's choir. When I got the call, I said that I didn't organize or direct the choir, but that I'd come and see if I can help them out. Basically all they wanted was someone to lead the group in singing the songs that we picked. So I said yes! We sang every Thursday morning. Then our group was incorporated into any of the parties the senior center had. We even went out to the local nursing homes and sang for the people there. Ah, good times!
About 4 or 5 years later the pianist passed away (as did a number in the group). The director offered to try and find another pianist, but since my life had some changes going on I decided it was time to take a break. Those years of singing with the seniors have given me some great memories!
A friend has recently started to volunteer at an Alzheimer facility and is singing songs with them. She was trying to figure out some old songs to sing with them. That made me think about those memories and the fun I had with my senior friends, so I offered to provide her with some of the titles we sang. Here they are:

America, the Beautiful
An Irish Lullaby
Battle Hymn of the Republic
Bicycle Built for Two
Blue Moon
Bye, Bye Blackbird
Bye, Bye Longjohns
By the Sea
California Here I Come
Cockles and Mussels
Danny Boy
Don’t Fence Me In
Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree
Do - Re - Mi
Edelweiss
Embraceable You
Far Away Places
Get Me to the Church on Time
Getting to Know You
Give Me a Little Kiss
God Bless America
Harrigan
I Can’t Give You Anything But Love
I Could Have Danced All Night
I Don't Know Why
I Get a Kick Out of You
I Love You for Sentimental Reasons
I’m A Yankee Doodle Dandy
I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles
I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover
I’m Nobody’s Baby
In My Easter Bonnet
It's A Grand Night for Singing
It’s a Great Day for the Irish
I Want a Gal
Let Me Call You Sweetheart
Let's All Sing Like the Birdie's Sing
Ma, He’s Making Eyes at Me
Mary’s A Grand Old Name
May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You
Me & My Shadow
McNamara’s Band
My Wild Irish Rose
Night and Day
Nothing Could Be Finer
Oh, What a Beautiful Morning
Over the Rainbow
Peggy O’Neil
Pretty Baby
‘S Wonderful

Side by Side
Singing in the Rain
Some Enchanted Evening

Thanks for the Memories
Till We Meet Again
What a Wonderful World
When Irish Eyes Are Smiling
When It’s Springtime in the Rockies
When the Red, Red Robin
When You’re Smiling
Wouldn't It Be Loverly
You Made Me Love You
Yes Sir, That's My Baby
Yes, We Have No Bananas
You're a Grand Old Flag

I know we sang so many more and the list could continue on and on...as do the memories!

You have 45 new ones on this list! Now to find the lyrics and listen so I remember them! Thanks, Anne!!! I am guessing "Bye, Bye Longjohns" is a take-off on Birdie. Like "ON Top of Spaghetti"--no one knew that one.

Now if we only had it all on a link so we could sing along with them at home.

I know most of these songs and this is a great list! I am going to have to look up ,"Bye Bye Longjohns" as that one was not familiar at all and sounds entertaining for any age.

Oh my I actually know quite a few and a long time ago in a village far far away from me now, a man used to come into the summer store that had a juke box and play " Yes I have No Bananas" today - over and over and over again !! So "Some Enchanted Evening" was one of my favourites as well as "Danny Boy" ... thanks !! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
