Nevertheless, she persisted!!

Way back in the early 1970's I lived in my first apartment. They had an indoor pool, which I took advantage of using...nightly. My goal was to gain confidence in the water, as I would have panic attacks if I couldn't touch the bottom. I would swim along the side, so I could grab the side if I got scared.

Looking back now, I gained confidence and enjoyed the de-stressing feeling, after a difficult day at work and I even lost weight. What a bonus!!!

Recently I completed a workout with Therabans, in the morning. That same afternoon, I headed back to the gym to get in an upper body workout. Bailey, one of my Occupational therapists asked, "what's going on? you were just here before lunch and now you are back?"

I told him I was bored and loved the way I felt after exercising! Can it be???

I LOVE TO EXERCISE??? Shhh...don't tell anybody....

Even when I'm laying in bed I find myself doing ankle pumps, straight leg lifts, pelvic tilts, shoulder blade squeezes, sit ups and butt squeezes. I do these effortlessly and without thought, because it FEELS GOOD!!! Shhhh... don't tell anybody...

Eight days ago, I was sick again. 101 fever, explosions out of both ends and slept a lot. My blood work came back with no significant problem and within four days, the room stopped spinning. On the fifth day I forced myself to get dressed, transfer and head to the gym. I started with 3# and 4# weights, to ease myself back into the groove. I felt the burn, it was a great 45 minute workout and when I returned to my room, that much needed nap was relaxing and without pain. I think I heard somebody snoring? lol

I rolled into the gym one afternoon, they were listening to some upbeat music. Tony got this huge grin on his face and said, "they're playing your song" !!! Yup...I roll in and "Crazy Train" starts playing!!! LOL

When I need to de-stress, I go exercise??? Shhhh....don't tell anybody...

Nevertheless, she persisted!!!!

    Thanks so much for this wonderful post- its great and gives me hope as well... all the basic exercises are the ones I do, too. I'm not quite to the enjoying it yet tho there are fleeting moments I experience relief and gratitude to feel increased strength or flexibility than I'd had months before.

    I still waste energy wishing I didn't have lymphedema, or stubbornly resisting the daily steps I can take to have my leg(s) improve. As if it will go away if I ignore it. That is definitely not helpful

    Why am I not fighting hard for myself, for greater mobility, for greater freedom, to feel better in my own skin? Maybe that doesn't matter so much as acting on what I do know. I want to have better quality of life, to be able to drive again and feel more comfortable in the physical world. I know the steps necessary, baby steps, I have wonderful support in family, friends and PT. The least supportive presence in my life is ME. I deserve better!
