Color the Coast 5K for Autism Society of Oregon Part 2

Monday, April 10, 2017

April 8th 2017 I completed my first 5K with the help of many good friends, especially, my walking coach. Two months ago I appointed her my walking coach and she has been faithful through sleet and rain and snow and flood and wind to help me stay on track. I couldn't have asked for better support. She and her husband drove to the beach and walked with me. They probably could have finished in half the time, but they stayed with me the whole route. We weren't dead last. That honor went to some families with small children. However, a lot of the walkers turned around at the 1 mile marker and headed back. My competition included two giant puppies in training to become autism support dogs, lots of children in wagons, one girl in a wheelchair, a woman over 80 on my team who put me to shame, young people much heavier than me, healthy people, and lots of kids and dogs. It was my kind of group. Definitely a family affair.

Found a classmate on my team I hadn't seen since high school (46 years). That was fun. Met lots of new people. My son and his family met me at the finish line. DD and GD babysat Buddy. Everyone has been so supportive of this effort.

It has paid off too. As a reward, I went shopping for one size smaller clothing. I went from a 2x to 1x and from size 20-22 to sizes 18-20. Since weeding all the 22s out of the closet, I needed more clothing. I bought two pairs of slacks, a cute shirt and a sweater to match it.

Lastly, the leader of my Frumpy Hiker team put a link on Facebook for me of another 5K on Easter morning promoted by a local church. It is a fund raiser for our county pregnancy center. Another worthwhile cause. I have signed up for it.
