It isn't a diet, it's a lifestyle! I had heard that so many times, but it finally became a reality for me as I buckled that seat belt (and even pulled it tight) and lifted off for vacation with my husband in London and Paris last week. I didn't have to whisper those embarrassing words to the flight attendant, "May I please have an extender?" That was just the beginning of the lifestyle changes to come!
For the first time in almost 30 years, I was a participant in a vacation and oh what fun it was! We jogged the Queen's walk along the Thames River, raced to catch a train and walked hours trying to find the oldest hidden pub in London.
In Paris, we began with a 4 hour bike tour of the city. I did have a small crash because I was so mesmerized by the beautiful architecture.
The next day was a 5 hour bike tour of the grounds and gardens of Versailles, which included a picnic by the lake. I actually sat on the ground and was able to get myself up without total embarrassment, that is a change!
Afterwards we had a three hour tour of the Palace. I have never climbed so many stairs in my life, but I did, and what magnificent sites I was able to behold!
Our day wasn't finished, we then raced off to the Louvre for another 4 hours, where we climbed the heights to see the Winged Victory of Samothrace!
At the end of the day, I had logged 33,617 steps, 56 flights of stairs and 24 miles. My legs ached and my dogs were a barking but I felt so good! In fact, I was ready to tackle the stairs of the Eiffel Tower, all 1,710 till I reached the top.
We had been told by another visitor that the lifts to the summit were not working on the previous day that she had been, so we prepared ourselves for the climb. Oh seriously, I was going to the top even if I had to make that climb. The old me would have told my husband to have fun and I would be waiting for him at the bottom. As luck would have it, the lifts were working, but we did enjoy taking ALL of those steps down and only because we thought it would be fun! As you can see from the pic, it was brutally windy and cold, but I loved every minute of being on top of the world!
To say our vacation was magical would be an understatement. For the first time in almost 30 years, I was a participant, I was living, I was making the most of a beautiful lifestyle change!
Life really does change when you give yourself the gift of health. I am not yet to my goal, but I am motivated and loving the journey of getting fit! I have wasted too many years observing life from the sidelines, NEVER AGAIN!
