I'm Tri-ing it!

Thursday, March 23, 2017

Earlier this week, I signed up for a local sprint triathlon, and I’m pretty excited about it! Something about having an event to look forward to has always inspired me to have a solid plan and stay on track. In the past, I’ve done a lot of running races and I love them but after blowing my knee out in 2012, I added biking to my workouts, and have considered adding swimming too. So finally, I decided to make the jump and sign up for a triathlon! It’s a pretty short sprint distance, 800 yard swim, 9 mile bike ride and 5K run, and the swim is in a pool, not open water, so I think it’s a pretty good way to see whether I like it. It’s May 20th so just about 8 weeks out when I signed up. It’s a very relaxed scholarship tri, right in my new neighborhood, so I think it will be a great way to get to know folks, too.

I found a few training programs online and decided to tweak the www.trinewbies.com program to meet my needs, stepping up the swim and run portions a little bit. It focused a lot of attention on heart rate training, which I have never done before. And while I have some questions about some of the methods of determining my aerobic heart rate zone, it seems like a reasonable approach to making sure you are able to make it through three phases of the triathlon without hitting the wall (bonking?). I looked at the Hal Higdon intermediate program and while it looked good, it required more weeks than I have as well as a bigger time commitment during those weeks. So, I’ll start with this program and see how it goes. I joined a gym in my new neighborhood, and I like it a lot. It has everything I need to train, including a salt water pool, which is so much better than a chlorine pool. I am surprised at how much I am enjoying swimming. I was never much of a swimmer, but this is a different experience.

I’ve also been doing a lot of research and realized I need some new clothes – a tri kit! – and a few new toys and accessories too. I’m planning on keeping it to a minimum until I decide whether this kind of racing is for me but in the meantime, I’m having fun!

Sparkfriends, any and all advice is welcome! Wishing all a healthy and productive Thursday!
