03-21-17 - Trail to Ft Bowie from Apache Pass Trailhead - Chiricahua Mtns - Arizona
Ft Bowie commemorates the bitter conflict between the Apaches of the area and the US military. I did the 3 mile round trip hike with my DH Jim and our neighbor Jack. The trail goes from a parking area to the visitors center. From there you can walk around to see various building ruins at the compound. The trail is loose rock/dirt and we didn’t use walking sticks… however my hiking boots were very useful. If I had walking sticks with me I would have used them. There were a lot of points of interest along the trail that were marked with signage and we also walked through a fenced graveyard that included the grave of Geronimo’s son who died at 2 years old. One of the highlights was spotting a bright red cardinal taking a drink at Aztec Springs. It was a warm day (high 80’s - low 90’s) and we didn’t bring a lunch. We did buy a protein bar at the visitor’s center to hold us over and they also gave us a cool commemorative pin for doing the hike. A fun day trip.
You can just barely make out the red cardinal in the picture below.
