Square Dance Workshop Report

Monday, March 20, 2017

After the first square dance I was embarrassed and ready to leave. No kidding! But the most wonderful thing happened. The nicest man and his wife came over and offered to dance with us. I danced with the husband and Gary danced with the wife and since they knew what they were doing, most of it we managed to do! I think we learned quite a lot, too. So we now have a book to study, but mostly if we are going to do this, we just need to keep dancing and trying. I did get over 32,000 steps yesterday and quite a bit of that was square dancing.

The community is amazing. I'd guess 200 manufactured homes in a community of all retired people who square dance. The square dancing awards, even national, hang all over their dance hall. There are people really, really into it. Doubt that we'll follow in those steps, but we just might get enough of the square dance steps that we truly enjoy it.

How wonderful this couple stepped up and helped out some newbies. That is what any successful organization needs to do to attract and retain new members. But wow, a whole community dedicated to square dancing!! I would be scared to even set foot in there! By manufactured homes, do you mean this is one of those gated trailer parks like they have for snowbirds?
I hope you and Gary continue with it. Not only challenging your mind, but body too and that is what keeps you young!

emoticon Glad you were "rescued" by some experienced dancers. Who knows, you live close enough to my cousin you *could* run into one another at dances!

    Always a learning curve!

I don't think we ever grow out of that feeling of wanting to "get it" right of the bat, to pick up the moves and blend in with the flow. Unfortunately, there's that learning curve! And it was a BEGINNER'S CLASS. That couple helped to make the newness more comfortable for you, as I'm sure they want you to love square dance as much as they (and that entire community, it seems) do. In any case, the first class is behind you. And you can always check out moves on YouTube.

My husband grew up in Northern Virginia, and his parents belonged to a square dance group, including those competitions. And my husband even danced while in high school, a group called "Dixie Teen Twirlers," which makes me crack up every time I hear the name. I think for his parents half the fun was getting all dressed up in their square dance costumes, Dad P with his string ties and cowboy hats, and Mother P with her flouncy dresses (she loved to sew, so there were a lot of them). When we cleaned out the family home, we discovered several racks of square dance dresses in the attic.
