When the new year started, I did what I always do that time of the year, that is review my life, in general. That includes my health status and my financial status. Since we had a lot of renovations done to the house in the fall, we were cash tight. And so, I decided to start looking on the internet for ways to get in better shape, without spending money. I looked in what freebies our city had to offer, and free access to several pools of our suburb was available. My husband and I decided to go on Saturday morning, when the swimming is free and for everybody. The indoor pool is separated in three sections. One for swimming lengths, one in the shallow end for families with children, and one in the deep end, for diving or other kind of swimming activities.
So we decided to start with some lengths, and finish with playing in the deep end (ball throwing, water threading or bicycling sitting on a noodle), for a total of 30 minutes.
At first, we were exhausted from the exercise and felt dizzy and almost drunk-like from the effort required. We both had been swimming in our young days, and thought that this would not be too difficult. We did not know how out of shape we were, for that type of total body exercise. But we stuck to it, every Saturday, and now, we are up to 45 minutes in the pool. The lengths are less of an effort, and we don't feel as depleted when we get out.
So we are hopeful that this exercise will contribute to our well being. And it is all for free!
