Off We Go

Into the wild blue yonder - flying to the DC area where we'll stay for a few months.

Amazing what five hours in an airplane can do, compared to a few days in a car or train, a few months on a bicycle, or even a year in an oxcart or on foot.

Flying is amazing, but also fundamentally unpleasant, with time spent ahead of the flight waiting for security and time spent after the flight waiting for luggage. Then little space to move about during the flight itself. I lose myself in crossword puzzles and a movie I take with me. That and sleep, if possible.

Goals for the DC area stay:

1) try to find an example of the sort place we can move to, meaning both a home and a location, where we can move and expect to live out our lives. This may mean moving into a condo in a high rise and seeing what life is like there, or searching in the far suburbs of DC for a single level house in good repair with a manageable lot (low lawn and garden maintenance) that will be friendly to aging knees and hips when that need arises.

2) work out when to sell the current house so that we can move into the type of place we think we'll want as our last home - and how much money we can realistically bring to that purchase (avoiding a new mortgage)

3) plan and begin to do any necessary work to make the current place ready for sale - mostly an issue of paint, tile and carpet cleaning. I hope there's no more than that to deal with.

We've got some travel planned. including a drive (not flight) back to California sometime in the summer. We hope to visit family and friends along the way, and we'll be a little mindful that we don't expect we'll want to do many more cross country auto trips. Even in autonomous cars. This trip, hopefully, will be done at a slower pace then we've done before when moving between armed forces duty stations on opposite coasts, and we'll look at it as a new voyage of discovery across our own great country. I hope to avoid mindless driving along the interstate highways to reach some far off motel by dinner time, and instead take some of the smaller roads that will take us by things we have not seen before. Stuff to see in small towns.

Airport cab comes soon. We'll be busy.

Sounds busy and exciting all at same time. Good luck with your future home search.

On your future travel plans.....my friend just relocated from SC to Washing State and had to drive it. I followed along at home with my map and predicted each day how far she would make it. Made it fun for me. She reported in each night on her sites. Made a side trip to see Mt. Rushmore and sent me pics from her car. Our senior travel plans blew up in our face when DH got ill. So, all my travels must be virtually done. emoticon Hope your plans to see the USA goes the way you plan. Keep us posted. And keep walking!
