End of Beck isn't The End

Friday, February 10, 2017

I'm still finishing The Beck Diet Solution but planning to pick up "Beck Green", The Complete Beck Diet for Life when I'm done with this one. I have proved to myself once again that I do better, eat better, think more clearly and helpfully, when I am focused on Beck's days-steps-chapters-checklists

Day 40 Continued

Yesterday I addressed Beck's encouragement to enrich our lives and not wait until our weight is perfect to pursue the life we want. Right. I am in goal weight range now, but still have flabbier middle than I want. Yet there is nothing I won't do because of it. I'll get my picture taken. I'll go swimming and to the beach. I'd like less loose skin and flab. But it isn't going to stop me from enjoying my life. And I know that for age 67 I look pretty good AND my blood work and annual physical reflect the good choices I've been making.

But there is another aspect to Day 40. Is my life rich enough right now? Are there some things I could do to add more meaning, more enjoyment, more positives to my life? I am blessed with much. Hubby and I went dancing last night. It was good. He's decided we are going back to our old Thursday morning dance group where he had some conflict. So glad he's getting over it. I do want to add Senior Dance back to my life. I have some running, strength and eating goals. Might benefit from some more interests and goals. I'll think about it. Don't want too much pressure, but don't want to fail to motivate myself to live my best life!!

Day 41

Keep your skills fresh. What will I continue?
I want to update my Advantages Response Card at least quarterly and continue to review it for motivation DAILY.
Eat slowly and mindfully sitting down, aiming for ALWAYS.
Tolerate hunger and cravings AS NEEDED.
Weigh DAILY even after high sodium and days with slips!!
Have a food plan EVERY day. Stick to it. Plan for challenges and special occasions.
Give myself credit. Address sabotaging thoughts. ONGOING
Cope with negative emotions without reaching for food AS NEEDED.

I believe if I focus on those 7 or 8 points I will be successful with weight management!

Day 42 - Practice, Practice, Practice

"Like playing an instrument or a sport, dieting takes constant practice." I am going to use Beck "Green" to continue my practice.

There are 2 more chapters to address, but they can wait. Got kids to school on time this morning. Going to do my physical therapy stretches now. And then I'm doing a little shopping and going to the library!

How are you enriching your life today? What key practices keep you motivated and managing your weight?

You know at age 66 (soon to be 67) I just accept that not only age but losing and gaining weight all those years is going to give me some excess skin. and that's OK.

Every day I check my goal board here and see the wonderful picture and read "Be Grateful" and that starts my day off right. Staying with my healthy eating and exercise plan is pretty easy for lots of reasons. Being able to wear all my skinny clothes is a big one. Keeping my heart healthy is another.

So much to think about with this one. Fitness. Family. Community. Good work or engagement. Learning. And some of the subtle skills like meditation. Most of all being present for all of it. It's a big world. Aren't we lucky?

Little things mean so much. Took son to see his birthmom and give her a Valentine's Day gift. Her birthday is later this month.

So glad you are getting back into the dance in the morning! Your hubby needs to do something active with you. You are laser focused on the excellent Beck program and its served you well. I have stubborn belly flab as well that I don't know what to do about either and I don't even have the excuse of having had children like you have. You live in a warm climate which means form fitting clothing and a lot less of it unlike me who just wants to wrap up in warm baggy fleece most of the time. Its effortless to conceal the rolls but not really my intention. I am chilled easily and always wear warm clothing and jackets and vests year round.
You really do need goals to motivate yourself. I envy you the ability to sit down and slowly eat and savor your meals. I simply can't seem to do that. I grew up in a household that ate their meals as fast as they could anywhere at anytime they felt like it depending on their commitments. Its a really hard mentality to get out of. Grazing all day long at this and that. At Mom's at least I have a table to sit at and eat but neither she nor her husband uses it -she eats anywhere, standing up in the kitchen, in her bedroom, sitting on a chair by the dog bed. He is banished to eating at his computer desk to contain the mess (she doesn't want newsprint on the table.) Very dysfunctional eating habits to be sure. Maybe someday I can break free and really enjoy my food in a far better manner.
I look forward to seeing what you do with the new Beck book and how further along you progress in your overall fitness and running goals -bet you will be amazing!

Looking forward to hearing your take on Beck Green.

Enriching my life today by engaging at work with students and coworkers, enjoying ourselves in lab, started my day with a nourishing breakfast, plan to complete Stage 7 of the return to running program after work.

I do those things you've listed under Day 41, except continued review of my Advantages Response Card and I feel incredibly fortunate that emotions do not drive me to eat. So, that is not a challenge for me. I also track fitness activity. Review weekly progress and make adjustments as needed to nutrition/fitness. I actually weight twice daily to monitor my underlying inflammatory condition. I am working with a clinical nutritionist and a personal trainer presently to address health/physical concerns.
