Beck Refresh Day #38: Deal With a Plateau
Monday, February 06, 2017
Today Dr. Beck tells me that when you're dieting, it is reasonable to expect to hit a plateau. Not just the dinky little day to day plateaus, but big honking weeks-long plateaus. Yes, I have experienced that. When that happens, it's frustrating and it feels like all my efforts are for nothing. She suggests doing one of these things:
Do nothing, and see if I go back to losing. It can happen.
Decrease my calories by 200 per day and see if that helps. This can happen as you lose weight because your body no longer requires the same number of calories to maintain.
Increase my exercise by 15 - 20 minutes per day. Simple equation, right? Burn more!
Accept my current weight as my goal weight and start maintaining.
This is very reasonable. One of things I love about Judith Beck's approach is that she encourages me to remove the emotion from the whole process of losing weight. It makes sense.
Right now, I'm on a plane headed off for my second week of work travel in a row. The weekend was way too short! I saw my older son one more time before he moves alway to Kansas City.... It was sad but I think this move will be good for him. He's ready to start the next phase of his life, getting a job in his new field and getting married. Time does fly by, reminding me to appreciate every bit of it that I can.
I'm prepared for this week's travel. Much more focused on sticking to my plan than last week. Prepare to take the time I need to stay focused on my goal, rather than giving in to others expectations. I have my travel yoga mat and my workout clothes, and plan to blog every day to stay accountable. I didn't do so well last week but I learned from it and will surely do better this week.
Happy Monday to all of my Sparkling friends! Wishing you good health and success in all you hope to achieve!
