The New Smoking?

Monday, January 30, 2017

I just read an article from our small town newspaper that was really scary and an eye opener. The title was "Chronic Sitting May be as Deadly as Smoking". It is being called "The New Smoking" because it can cause some of the same issues as smoking. Even though we may get an hour a day of exercise, sitting throughout the rest of the day can cause some very serious health issues. Research has shown that sitting too much is associated with "increased risk of mortality from heart disease, cancer and diabetes- regardless of whether you exercise regularly." . It is not just those who work at a desk. Just think of all the other times we are sitting-driving, watching TV, or surfing the net. I for one am planning ways to keep from sitting so much. A standing desk sounds like a good first step. I also have a small timer which I can set to make sure to get up more often. Maybe we need a good scare occasionally.

Good reminder, thank you for posting it!
I have an adjustable table, so I usually start my days standing and when I get tired I'll lower it and sit down. I get pain in my lower back when I stand for hours at the same place.
so what I take away from your post, is that I should maybe sit for a wile and then stand in the afternoon again.

Great blog. I find I sit a lot at work and at home so have been working on getting up and moving at least a few steps each hour. I do not get as stiff as I use to and it helps get my steps in for the day.

Thank you for the reminder. It really is a matter of life or death. We need to read and heed the important research that says we need to be moving all day long, not just when we are exercising. Thanks again for this important reminder.

This is very good information. I have an alarm on my fitbit that tells me to get up every hour and move around to get 250 steps. It has really been a help to me.

Interesting. But too much of anything is rarely a good thing and that would definitely include sitting.

Our bodies were made to move. emoticon emoticon emoticon I’ve seen a lot of information on this in recent years. Get up off the couch, step away from your desk, stand vs. sit when given the opportunity. Good blog. emoticon

Wow! This is new to me and I thank you for your blog. Usually I don't sit more than an hour at the time, but if I am really interested in something on TV I do, so, I will remember this article. emoticon

Interesting isn't it, that is why tractors all have instituted the reminder to move hourly, along with the recommendation to get 10 K steps a day.
