Strong and Lean in 2017 - January 19th

Thursday, January 19, 2017

Recently, I joined the Green Valley Rec Hiking Club and I'm so glad I did! I have been on a number of hikes with the group and the variety is just awesome. My DH isn't fond of group hiking as he isn't always comfortable with the terrain and pace. It is a great solution for me however as I'm able to still hike without him and feel safe in a group. It is also a wonderful way to see new and interesting sights in our area.

Every month, a hike schedule is posted with a huge variety of hikes to choose from. The leadership and organization has done an outstanding job putting together the framework for the club. The group gets together every Thurs. and believe it or not.. there are over 600 members! Today, I got to the meeting area about an hour early and 3 of the 4 hikes (usually limited to 25 people) I had picked out were already full! I would guess that there were at least 250 people going on hikes today and about 10 or 12 hikes on the schedule that varied from very difficult to easy. This time of year there are a lot of snowbirds in town, so I still need to figure out how early I have to be there to get into my first choice pick.

Todays hike was a 6 mile out and back route. Here is the info I recorded in my hiking journal.

01-19-17 Diablo Foothills - 6 miles -  Led by Pat Boeck - Easy C (with Hiking Club) Tumacacori Mtns This was an easy hike along a forest service road that was mostly level but rocky.  Didn’t “need” hiking poles, but they were useful to maintain balance and confidence through the rocks.  Went through a ranching area and observed cows munching away.  Along the road we encountered two separate border patrol crews and one was towing a horse trailer with horses.  Also hiked past a camera monitored lookout tower. Weather was cool but it didn’t rain as had been predicted.  Elevation Gain 400 ft.
