Beginning my Journey with Spark

On December 14, 2016, I received a diagnosis of Diabetes 2. For me, that news was a huge wake up call. My doctor told me that he believes I can change this if I start NOW eating healthy and adding exercise to my life style. So, this is my motivation and reason for needing and wanting to lose weight. In my past (before the Diabetes diagnosis), I have been able to lose weight, but when I started feeling good about myself, I slowly but surely put all the lost weight back on. Since joining SparkPeople, I have resolved to make some permanent changes. All the tools I need are right here. Besides all the great education, motivation and support tools, the food and exercise trackers are my favorites. They keep me accountable. As far as the scale goes, I am doing something different. I am setting 5 pound increment goals. This is achievable for me and it is a way for me to reward myself often. I CAN AND WILL GET HEALTHY 5 pounds at a time and avoid having to take medication for Diabetes.

    I know how you feel. For me it was the diagnosis followed by 3 years of denial. I wish I had changed sooner, because in my opinion eating carbs and depending on insulin, and medication to control blood sugar is a slow burn out of that system.

    I think that the further you go down that path the less "fit" your body is to manage carbs. At this point my body can manage up to about 60 grams of carbs a day. I know for sure its not 100 because I've had high blood sugar when eating that much.

    My guess is that had I changed my ways early on, I'd be better off now.

    In any case food choices have an enormous impact on blood sugar, and eating low carb probably can manage blood sugar without medication, it does for me anyway.

    I have had diabetes 15 years now and take insulin shots 4 times a day. This site has helped stableize my numbers and lower my intake by of insulin by half. I also set lower goals 20 pounds at a time. you can do it watch sugar and carbs.
