Back in ketosis

Tuesday, December 20, 2016

It took about 48 hours of eating less than 20 carbs to start registering keytones on the keto sticks again. During that time, I did not have 'keto flu' symptoms, so I'm thankful for that, but I did feel a bit sluggish from all the extra water weight that came with the consumption of a million carbs. I expect the water weight to resolve itself in the next day or so since part of the processing of carbs requires additional water to be stored, and without all the carbs coming in, the body will let go of the water.

I have been listening to a pod cast called 2ketodudes . It is AWESOME! I am pretty much obsessed with it as it's format is very 'keto for dummies.' The two podcasters are funny, articulate, and each episode ends with a couple of their recipes. Each episode is less than an hour, but packs a lot of information into that time. I highly recommend it for anyone considering trying keto. It is because of one of their episodes that I realized I have been sabotaging myself by eating too much protein. For all the reasons an Atkins diet is terrible for your kidneys and liver, eating too much protein in a keto diet is also bad for you, with the additional caveat that too much protein can knock you out of ketosis. Lesson learned. I am now monitoring how many grams of carbs, fat, and PROTEIN I eat daily.

Weight loss - I will delve into this a little more in a future blog, but I'm hoping to lose 20 pounds or more in the short term. I have noticed my clothes fit a bit looser, but my weight has only changed by about six pounds, with the majority of the weight being loss in the first three weeks. This is not abnormal for keytoers. It's called P.I.S.S., or Post Induction Stall Syndrome. It's a plateau of sorts that happens to most everyone and usually resolves itself. I will take my measurements tonight and use that as my guide since I am still running 25+ miles per week and doing a H.I.I.T workout twice weekly.

Lastly, Christmas is five days away...Wow!
