Back on the Low Carb Wagon

I fell off the low carb wagon, and boy did I fall off. February of 2015. My parents were going into an assisted living facility, and to keep them entertained during the move, my brother and I took them out to a nice restaurant lunch and dinner, every day for three days. By the third day, I was indulging in the desserts on offer. And I have not eaten low carb since. I had lost so much weight ... somewhere around 30 pounds, if I recall correctly. But that wasn't enough of a motivation to keep me on it.

Fast-forward through my breast cancer treatment (May-Nov 2015), not to mention another couple of years of living the non-low-carb life! I was up to 205 lbs, which was even higher than my original SP starting weight of 203. Time to make a change. Then, the other day, hubby came home from the doctor with the news that his blood sugar is indicating prediabetes, for the second year in a row. Doc's strict orders? Lose 20-40 pounds before his next checkup. He's tried very hard to lose weight for the past year, but the one thing he's never tried is a low-carb diet. SO, he's going low-carb, and I'm joining him to make life easier for him (and incidentally, try to lose the weight I've put on in the interim.)

This is about my 5th or 6th "starting over" post on SP but I'm going to try not to be daunted by life this time. Stress tends to lead me to the kitchen, but I'm going to try to focus on making low-carb treats instead of snacking on stuff that's around the house. (It will help that hubby won't be buying box after box of cookies!)

    My husband & I have both been very successful with low-carb in the past.
    Unfortunately, carbs can be like an addiction for us, and our on again/off again, up/downbhistory is similar to yours. For the past couple weeks I'm working on getting back on track with several SP-recommended little steps for awareness and motivation. My next step is to eliminate refined sugar and reduce carbs overall.

    My husband was just diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, likely from his indulgence with Coca-Cola. We're counting carbs and hoping that the insulin is a short-term thing as he makes the adjustment to diet sodas. From my perspective, I don't mind eating low-carb. I really wish there were fewer carbs in the food that we eat!

    Remember, MOST of us have had re-starts! And it's OK. We are HUMAN. And you've been through a lot of life turmoil since February 2015, clearly! You've made an assessment, and a decision, and you KNOW you can do this!

    Welcome back to the starting line. You have a lot of company as we each work on our "experiment of one" to find the right, sustainable plan for our unique selves.

    When I think low-carb, for me it really means eliminating or at least reducing the desserts - the stuff with all the sugar - especially the stuff that comes in a box or bag.

    My DH is now serious about his weight too. Makes it so much easier when both of us are on the same page.
