My Day Off
Friday, December 09, 2016
Yesterday was the only day of 12 that I had off from work. I decided I wasn't going to do anything remotely productive and I was just going to have a day of pampering myself. I 'slept in' to 7:30, had a short workout and took a nice long shower. I put on a mineral mask and sat around in my robe and gave myself a manicure. I walked Bingley, had a nice lunch of leftover turkey, butternut squash, craisin and wild rice casserole, then got dressed and hit the road.
I live about 15 minutes from Philadelphia so I hopped on the speed line/Patco and rode into the city to meet a friend. We headed down to city hall where there was a Christmas market. It was so cool to wander around and see all the ornaments and toys and candies and German foods and gluwhein. They even had a Kathe Wulfahrt tent full of German made ornaments. I didn't buy anything but my friend got some kettlecorn. Then we headed to Reading Terminal Market (which I'm sure you've seen on tv at some point if you watch travel shows) and walked around there. I had an Amish style soft pretzel (like an Auntie Anne's pretzel as opposed to a Philly soft pretzel, so lighter and fluffier and butterier) which was still hot and soooo good. We looked around at all the shops and I got recommendations for which stalls have the best food so when I go back with my husband we can have the best food. :)
We had 5 pm reservations for Amada so we got changed and walked the 5 or 6 blocks there. I got LOTS of walking in yesterday which hopefully made up for some of the eating. Amada is a Jose Garces restaurant that specializes in Spanish tapas. We got the tasting menu with the additional upgrade of an Iberico ham selection. Here's a list of the dishes:
Tuna and caper spread with balsamic
3 types of Iberico ham with baguette, cornichon ,caper berries and mustard
Some sort of fish crudo with grapefruit and pomegranate jelly (crudo means raw)
aged Manchego cheese with truffle and lavender honey on baguette with green apple
grilled Spanish chorizo
lamb meatballs in foie gras manchego cream sauce (the sauce was amazing but I am not a fan of lamb)
crab stuffed piquillo peppers with almonds
wild mushroom and asparagus flatbread with shaved Manchego (the best thing I ate all night)
Wild mushroom and asparagus risotto with more Manchego (second best thing)
roasted cauliflower in mustard vinaigrette over creamed goat cheese (not my fave)
rare grilled skewer of wagyu beef and new potatoes
crispy pork shoulder over rosemary white beans (I was so out of room at this point I couldn't have more than 2 bites)
some sort of parfait that I think was pound cake with caramel and a lemon foam with cacao nibs.
holy food Batman! It was pretty expensive $75pp not including drinks but there was SO MUCH FOOD. I brought a ton home to share with the Hubs. I just can't eat that much in one sitting anymore. The food was very good (but not as good as my favorite restaurant Zahav).
Now I need to go get up off this butt and workout, because I work at 2. Have a great weekend!
