Winter is hard for me. I live alone and can't do much outside can get hurt easy, I am disabled so have to be careful. I do not have my children close, both are boys and they are very independent. My oldest is moving to Australia not sure I will like this. My sister left for the winter to Florida. I get sad my birthday is in Dec. And the Holidays are very lonely. So winter is not the best time of the year.
I am to start this new challenge to motivate me to lose weight so maybe next year I can visit my son in Australia. So hoping this weight challenge keeps me on track plus get to know some friends more here on Spark so hope I can make this winter more positive. This is my goal for this new year wish me well friends.

    Hi Rose!

Winter is difficult for me also... But I have found things to do that help keep me occupied. Anyway- There are certainly days that I call my Mom up- to say, I'm BORED. there is nothing to do... When in all actuality- it is what I make of it- and there is ALWAYS something to do...

My Daughter plays hockey- so that breaks up the winter months and makes them happier- and go by faster for me. The Season Change between Fall- Winter really gets to me- it's like my body knows Winter is coming and I get very depressed. It's called SADD ((Seasonal Affective Depression Disorder)). I don't like it- but it is what it is- and I have learned to get through.

I think going to church is a great place to start! There are programs available- I don't know about NY. There MUST be there too- because we have some in VERMONT... But there are all sorts of things to do for less money- or free....

I know Rose- It's difficult to make friends and such when you are starting from SQUARE ONE...

I did JOIN A LOCAL TOPS GROUP in my area--- It is a Weight Loss Support Group- and IT has been the BEST thing I have done in a long while.... If you ever need to talk- Write me!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

    Hi Posey,

When is your December birthday? Just had mine yesterday. I've been sick since last Friday but tonight I got out with my husband, met our daughter and daughter-in-law and two friends from Raleigh who we haven't seen in probably 20 years. We had a lovely dinner together, celebrating both John and my birthdays. It was so nice to see these friends and we're hoping to get back together again before long. We live 3 hrs apart so we'll have to work on it.

When does your son leave for Australia? What takes him there? Australia is a fun place to visit. You'll have to plan on making a visit while he's there and explore. I've only been to the Sydney area and would love to see more of the country.

    Happy Trails... emoticon

My long term weight loss goal is connected to future travel also. My husband is a musician, and he's going to be performing in England for the month of Sept. 2017, so I want to be fit and confident if I get the chance to go along.

I agree, the holidays are a hard time to be feeling alone and shut in by the cold. But stay motivated and look forward to your goal and your future trip, too!

    Cheers, Sorcha emoticon

Good luck on your challenge! It's got to be hard to have your son move so far away! I would love the great excuse to go visit Australia, though. I hope you can find some way or reason to get out and about more or just see people but I remember how the cold and snow kept us inside in Nebraska. Does your complex have any activities or get togethers?

My children live in New Zealand and England, so I don't get to see them at this time of the year. Do things that make you feel good - listen to music, volunteer (even if it is only a phone thing) - giving to others has a way of making everyone feel better.

Indeed this season can be difficult and especially if you cannot get out!
I agree with Cindyroo, listen to music that uplifts you and if you can stay in contact with friends and neighbors. As our children grow and leave to live their own lives our focus needs to change. I know you know that..just I guess wanting to let you know many of us are facing "empty nest" Christmas .
Wishing you well with this challenge!

I understand, I have limited abilities, also I dont get to see my 2 sons much due to their work. Winter is always hard but listen to music/read uplifting messages. Go to church make new friends aka church family to keep your spirits up.
