Travel & Fitness

Wednesday, November 30, 2016

We just drove from NY to FL over three days. I was worried about getting in my steps and staying healthy and turns out it was easier than I thought. With some planning, committment & knowledge I did it. On the day we left Cora and I took a longer than usual walk so we'd both get in a nice walk before all that sitting.

Exercise: Our dog Cora needs & wants a walk first thing so got that in each morning. The first morning in Richmond, I brought her in and went back out and found a huge parking lot behind the hotel and got in 20 minutes. All three days in the car, we stopped every 2 hrs or so to take Cora for a walk.
Third day we were in Savanna and when we got there I did 10 minutes on treadmill & yesterday I did 18.
With all the walking we did with Cora and these extra walks, I got in about 14,000 steps each day.

Food: Made sure breakfasts were healthy and passed up the waffles in favor of cereal. Subway has a delicious veggie sandwich for 230 cals that you can load up with veggies and I had them add a little lite mayo. dinners were a bit of a challenge, but found something to eat.

Relax: Got in my stretches in the hotel room and a hot shower every night helped to relax me.

Thought it couldn't be done, but I did it! Now in FL typing this out on our screen porch with warm beautiful weather. Will head to the fitness center soon. Since we'll be here for about 5 weeks I can't treat this as a vacation but as "real life" and will stick to my regular habits with food, exercise, & relaxing.

Wayne Dyer PhD said he exercised daily and even on all his trips he'd find a way to walk up and down hotel hallways if the place didn't have a gym. He pasted away last year and I still miss finding him on the internet. He was 75.

Sounds like with advance planning, you were able to make your trip and still get your steps in. Congratulations!!

I usually try to keep a cooler with water and some food that we can eat, so that not every meal is "eat out". Stopping a few times to get out and stretch helps too.

Great job. So often good planning fails in the face of reality. Way-to-go!

Awesome job! When I travel I take a small cooler full of water, and portable healthy snacks, and meals then have a healthy dinner at a restaurant.
