2016 has been hard on all of us

But it is also a symbol of hope. I went to a costume party where someone was dressed as this year 2016, but they were on fire. It has been rough for all of us on this little island called Earth. We wonder whether next year might see less stress, war, violence or senseless death. We pray and hope it will be different, but it doesn't work that way. Despite what history teachers told us, there weren't long reigns of peaceful "good" years offset by bad ones. Even in a relatively good time we probably won't see it until it has passed us by.
Sunday marked the beginning of advent which is a very special holiday for me. It is a time where we can face the true darkness and cold around us, weep, and then rejoice. Because this *gestures broadly* is not everything. My favorite part of the story is that in the middle of winter when salvation arrives it is a weak, poor, refugee baby with a morally questionable mom.
You don't have to believe any of the story for it to still be striking: what kind of help can a baby give in the middle of winter?! This creature can't even feed himself let alone get shelter! But hope comes to us. It may not come in a way we recognize, but it comes.
I have to hope. And then I have to use that hope to fuel myself. For when I am strong I can do the things needed to make this a good year. It's on me, and hope is all I have.
