Wild kingdom - 10-25-16

Tuesday, October 25, 2016

Some days the wildlife here is out of control. DH tried to take the dog for a walk this morning. The first thing he encountered was a mama bear and two cubs.

David Dietrich got this photo of a paw print (figured you didn't want to see a photo of what they REALLY left on our lawn!). They were about 1/2 block away, so he waited until they cleared the area before walking on. I'm not saying we're blase, but we've had bears in town for quite awhile, as evidenced by this photo Eric Trieu took in 2014:

Yes, that is a bear, shopping on our main street through town.

But back to DH and the dog. There is a bike trail through a greenbelt in our neighborhood, which goes down to the main street through town and the river. DH had started down this bike path when he realized there was a mama moose with two calves standing on the trail.

This photo was taken by John F. Russell - DH doesn't bother with photos when confronted with a moose and her offspring early in the morning! I mentioned she had calves with her. These were likely born in spring 2015, as they were both about 6 feet tall. We're less blase about moose than bears as moose are more confrontational.

In fact, while DH was standing still with the dog, two twenty-somethings on skateboards whipped by him on their way down the trail. When the lead skateboarder saw the moose standing in the trail he shouted "Oh, ^%$@#!!!" and ran his skateboard off into the tall grass by the trail.

The moose (tellingly) didn't budge.

Bears are very unpredictable... as are the moose. I shivered when I opened your blog and saw that bear print. The horror stories I've heard during my 8+ years in our wild N.Ontario are what came to mind. Please be careful. emoticon emoticon emoticon
