How do you get 120 Exercise/Fitness minutes each day?

Friday, October 21, 2016

Those who know me fairly well also know that I'm no fan of exercise. I've switched to calling it fitness, as it has a more positive sound for me. Exercise (to me) is what "they" tell you to do because it is important, but fitness (to me) means that I am working to get my body fitter and stronger. Just my little effort to try to improve my outlook about it.

Here's my question for all you exercise (or fitness) stars, particularly those of you who do 120 minutes or more a day: what on earth do you do for your 120 minutes of daily exercise? I've rarely hit that number. I'm just curious and wonder if I could ever get there. I'd be grateful for your comments.

I find it easier to exercise several times a day and listen to audio books on my MP3 while I walk.

I can't do that much "exercise" either, but if I do something extra that I don't do every day I count it as exercise. For instance, I count raking the woodlot as exercise and sweeping down spider webs from the breezeway. I don't do it everyday, but it's work and I count it. 15 minutes intervals add up... I do a minimum of 12 minutes pre-op knee exercises daily every morning. I have an ergometer that I use for my arms. I do chair marching and chair dancing. The dancing is fun! I do sink ups and wall push ups sometimes... Variety is good, and doing something you think is fun is the best. I love to swim and do water aerobics. Do what you enjoy! emoticon

HI Jeannie hon !! What a WONDERFUL question !!

Here's a sample of what I've done on Thurs:

    Walking: 2 mph (30 minutes per mile) ⊗ 30 115
    Walking: 2 mph (30 minutes per mile) ⊗ 35 134
    Yoga (general stretching) ⊗ 55 210
Create Group Copy Exercises MINUTES CALORIES BURNED
    Daily Totals: 120

When I am well I can do this easily. In general I break it down to 20 to 40 minutes per each exercise (varies each time) usually 4 to 5 per exercise.

Hope this helps hon. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how you are now calling it Fitness minutes and NOT exercise. GREAT JOB !!! Hey would you put that into a blog? This could help so MANY who also struggle with that word "exercise"?

I have my routine scheduled for me by my physiotherapist so you might not want to emulate this unless you start slowly and have a need to .I have both osteoarthritis psoriatic arthritis and spinal injuries .I do 30 minutes on the recumbent exercise bike, 30 minutes of leg lifts and ankle rotations and prescribed leg exercises , 30 minutes of weights and 30 minutes of swimming .tired yet Jeannie? Now I did not always do it as regularly but if I want to get up on crutches at all I have to. It may not be right for you. Before you do that amount of exercise they make us fill out a Par-Q to make sure we will not harm our health by doing that.I have been told that one day I will have to reduce the amount and resign myself to the wheelchair.

Some weeks I do better at getting 120 and other days I just have too much going on. I find that if I can get some exercise in the morning that I can work some other times in. I often walk while I watch TV or lift weights. If you did 10 minutes of walking every hour for the hours you are up that would add up quickly also. The important thing is to just keep moving however you can and when you can.

I don't hit it often, but I break it up in 10 or 15 minute increments over the course of the day. I keep reading that it doesn't have to be done all at one time...so I don't. Good luck!

I used to get 120 easily - now I really have to work hard to get there. Most days I'm happy with 60-90 and I get there with a morning walk (45-60 minutes) and I have a stationary bike (30-45). Today we are painting again so I got another 30 minutes there. If I go to a big store or the mall I keep my legs moving (like marching in place) if I stop to look at something. You'd be surprised how much more you can get that way. The older I get the harder it is to get there so some days I'm happy if I just keep moving!!!!! I think you'll be fine if you just do some kind of fitness the best you can do.

Hi Jeannie - The only time I get near 120 mins is when I go to the pool. I do 80 mins of walking & physio exercises (for my hip), 30 mins of treading water in the deep end, and 10 mins of stretching. On some days I get less (90 - 100). On days when I don't go to the pool I get hardly any.
I like how you refer to it as fitness, not exercise - it does sound more positive.
I hope you are having a great day.

I don't know the last time I got 120 minutes of actual exercise. My exercise are all farm relayed and it's not consistent so I never know if it is actual exercise, so I never count it.

Unfortunately, I am not able to exercise that much anymore, but when I could, I played tennis, rode a bike outside, golfed everyday that I could fit it in. I also belonged to two bowling leagues and I have always enjoyed swimming, so just have fun!
