15 years ago, I had 5 family members who would have been right at the Towers when the attacks occurred. My sister's husband had a leg injury so he took a cab that morning instead of the subway and the cab was stuck in traffic. He didn't get there. Their daughter was in school several blocks away. I don't remember why but they avoided the Towers that day. My brother missed his ferry to cross over from NJ. He was lined up for the next ferry when the first tower fell. My cousin and his wife, who both worked there, were on vacation that week. My family was protected from death and serious injury. Do you know where you were? I was in a Middle School, getting ready for the kids to arrive (2 hours difference). One of the teachers had a TV on. We were frozen! I couldn't reach any of my family for hours because the lines were all busy.
My heart goes out to all of those whose family, friends, loved ones were there in the midst, as well as all of the heroes who now suffer health consequences from being there. The death toll continues due to the health consequences of breathing the debris all those years ago, the PTSD for those who survived and feel guilty and so much more.
So today, let's than God for the freedom we have, for those who have gone before us to make our lives safer.
