It's the Little Things

So often people tell me or write that "this is the week that I change everything!" Will go to the gym every day for 1 hour. Track my food, and only eat clean." The first thing that goes through my mind is "not gonna happen." And I don't mean to be negative, it's just that from experience most of us can't or won't make such dramatic changes in one week.
Instead, think of all the little things that you can do or not do and pick one or two each week. If you haven't been exercising or don't have time, commit to a 10 minute walk every day. Sneak it in before you leave for work, or cut your lunch hour short by 10 minutes and walk after lunch. If you drive to work, walk around the parking lot a couple of times. If you commute, get off the bus or subway a stop or two earlier and walk. You'll start to love the way your body feels when it moves. When that one 10 mins walk becomes a habit, add another one. Then another one. It helps if you wear a pedometer or activity tracker, but not necessary.
If you haven't been tracking your food, start doing that. Don't even change anything - just track. You'll learn so much and after a week of doing that analyze what you're eating and see where you can make some small changes. Water instead of soda? Whole wheat bread instead of white? Fruit instead of ice cream for dessert? Salad instead of chips at lunch. Pick one change each week.
You don't have to be perfect. Heck, none of us are perfect. What matters is that we start and build on our success. Spark has many great challenges and one of my favorites is the small changes challenge. Over the course of 30 days you'll see changes and you'll be on the way!
What are you doing to move forward on your journey?
