Fit and Fiber Full Challenge Day 3

So, today we took a quiz about snacking. Snacking isn't a big issue for me when I'm in focus. Yesterday, I planned for a piece of olive oil banana bread for my afternoon snack. It has almost no sugar in it, but it was still too sweet for me and didn't take the edge off my hunger. Learning experience. I'm going to give away the rest to my son's girlfriend, who loves banana bread.

I do best with a combination of protein, some healthy fat and good carbs for a snack. For example, a peach and a TBS of nuts. I also always try to drink at least a glass of water with my snacks.

    I found early on that I had to have a protein in my snack--some people on sparks would be satisfied munching on a handful of carrots or whatever but I can eat a whole bag of baby carrots and still be hungry, but a handful of nuts or something and that is all I need.

    I try to make sure every snack has protein and carbs--if I have that, fat is usually covered as well. I really like cheese and whole grain crackers. Nuts (love pistachios, but I usually eat something like almonds) or seeds (e.g. sunflower seeds) with a carb (often fruit) work well for me too.

    I sometimes eat peanut butter, though I'm not a big fan of it unless it's on toast. I haven't tried nut butters (in part because my husband is very allergic to nuts. While he's also allergic to peanuts, it's not as severe so he can have some peanut butter as long as he is careful. Nuts/nut butters he can't have at all) I'm told are also very good.

    A favorite summer snack, if I can keep the carrots quarantined (husband is acutely allergic to those) is hummus on carrots. As it's hard to keep the carrots sufficiently quarantined, I usually opt for hummus with something he's not as sensitive to, like celery.

    I have found that snacks are important for me--they help keep my blood sugar stable and my hunger under control. I tend to eat one big meal a day (dinner) a small meal (lunch) and effectively two snacks (breakfast and a "snack" between lunch and dinner) I know ideally I should eat more earlier in the day, but I'm just not hungry for more, and my over all calorie intake is usually pretty good.

    I don't snack much these days. I think some of the old favorites are: frozen grapes and an ounce of cheese. Strawberries with whipped cream (belly fat cure).
