What Happened in 2009 and My Life Since Then

In June 2009 my doctor recommended Livestrong as a way to enter my food intake and participate in an online community to get some insights on health and fitness. I was faithful on the site and, being inspired by the stories of success with a majority of them including running, I got the idea of doing a half marathon. I had gotten a flyer in the mail from the Crohns and Colites Foundation and they offered training. The event would take place the following June.

I trained for the half half heartedly and started to lose some of the 100lbs that I needed to lose at that time. I maintained some of my poor eating and drinking habits but I was working out hard, for me, so I saw some progress, although I didn't notice the change in my body until one of the coaches told me.

I didn't follow all of the training recommendations and missed some of the group sessions. I didn't stretch enough and push myself enough. I learned to run/walk and to come to welcome that high we get when we are exerting our bodies and are happy.

I had pains in my left heel and went to have it looked at. Plantar fasciatis was the diagnosis. The race was the next day. Although in pain I was excited because I was going to Boston with my sister, my biggest supporter and would have an opportunity to explore another city. I completed the half.

That November 2010, trying to walk fast to work, I tore my meniscus. I spent a few days away from work and Thanksgiving using crutches. I subsequently had orthoscopic surgery, where they discovered arthritis (2011). I never fully recovered from that surgery. Somehow they activated the arthritis and I got progressively worse. I was angry at my surgeon because he had promised me that I would be good as new in 3 months. I started taking anti inflammatories and that alleviated the pain somewhat. I developed a limp and had difficulty walking. I was miserable.

In 2014 I couldn't take it anymore so I went to see my sister's surgeon, who had performed a very successful hip replacement for her and I was hopeful I would find a solution. Xrays revealed a significant amount of arthritis in the knee and he told me I had choices: live with the pain and take shots every 6 months or total knee replacement. I chose the latter. Later that year I had the surgery. I followed all of the instructions for the rehab and expected to one day be able to run again. The surgeon had told me that was prohibited but I figured that if I lost at least 50 lbs I would be able to do it. Once again I had issues. I went back to the surgeon and told him about my persistent pain. He dismissed it and sent me to an ankle specialist who sent me for an MRI. The MRI revealed that the prosthesis appeared to be separating from the bone. I went back to the surgeon and he did not have a good reaction. He asked me twice if I had jumped from a building. I was pissed, really pissed. How dare he blame me. I had been doing everything I was instructed to do. He sent me for a cat scan which revealed the same thing.

I sought second and third opinions. The first one was to a highly recommended surgeon who had performed a double hip replacement, on the same day, on one of my former managers, who's life was transformed. He looked at the MRI, the cat scan and xrays and told me the news was not good. He said the prothesis was inadequate and seemed to be crooked.

I went for the third opinion to another renowned surgeon and he told me that the prosthesis was not meant for the stress it had been sustaining and was crooked. Issue confirmed. I went back to the second surgeon and decided to go for a total knee replacement revision. I didn't look forward to the rehab but I was confident that I was in the right hands.

I had the total knee replacement revision this past April. The rehab went better than the last time. I was mentally prepared for the pain and the hospital's customer service was exceptional. I went back to the surgeon 6 weeks later for my follow up appointment, which I requested to take place two weeks earlier than anticipated. He was thrilled with my progress. He showed me the prothesis and it was truly a sight to behold. It is huge in comparison to the other one. He cleared me with no restrictions, including running, and any exercise I could handle. Suddenly my life changed. I thought about all of the opportunities that were now available to me so I could succeed in my health and fitness goals. I could start running/walking again.

Fast forward to yesterday. I joined the Nike running club and went for the second time. I ran/walked 3 miles. I had a pacer who stayed with me the whole way. He encouraged me and also challenged me. I was pain free. I ran in running/walking intervals with the running for a greater distance than I had ever run. The weekend before my sports bra and my panties had chaffed me so I was a little leary of that happening again, but it did not.

Today I have signed up for a cardio total body class at the gym followed by a pilates class. I have signed up for 5 races, starting this month and ending New Year's Eve with a midnight run in Central Park. I have dreamed of doing that for years. Now I can.

    emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I hope you don't mind,Ruthie, that I've also been praying for you. You have shown us all that sometimes one opinion isn't enough! My knee replacement is the best thing I ever did for myself.....but my doctor doesn't want me running. That is okay, at 70 I probably don't need to run anywhere. Ha! I can walk 5 miles a day though and that is what I've been doing this summer. So glad that you can do something you truly enjoy! You are well and truly on your way to health now!
