#537: Doing It Our way

When government does not work, we, the people need to do what has to be done. No, not talking about overthrowing the government, but something much closer to home.
There is a middle and an elementary school nearby

. Because they are part of our Orange County (Florida) School System, the city of Orlando says the schools' locations are county property whereas the school board says the schools are in the city.
The problem? School begins next week and the grounds surrounding the entrances looked like a landfill, truly trashy. But the two government entities wouldn't take responsibility of cleaning up the area.
This morning, four neighbors and I and one of the school principals filled the back of a pickup truck to overflowing with yard bags full of trash we collected

. Looks so much better.

The principal said he will put pressure on the school board to provide more maintenance help during the summers.
Now, when parents, students, teachers, and staff show up for the start of school Monday they will be greeted not by a landfill but by clean, raked grounds.
Sometimes we as neighbors need to pitch in to make our neighborhood an area of which people can be proud.
