Well, yet again, we get a 100 year event. They seem to come much more often than every 100 years! Yesterday, parts of Phoenix and the surrounding area received a deluge of rain - up to 3 inches in areas within an hour (we average 7 to 8 inches of rain in a normal year). Our main freeway was shut down because the pumps in the underpasses could not handle the volume of water and they broke down. There was a lot of street flooding because there was so much water it could not drain off fast enough. A lot of our soil is clay and we pave way too much, leaving nothing to absorb the water. Other areas received little or no rain at all. To give you an idea of what we experienced here are a few photos I borrowed from our local paper's website: www.azcentral.com:
Luckily I was safely at the dentist when the rain hit, and my house received only a trace of rain in the rain gauge!
My dad used to say that a cowboy could wash his hands in an AZ rainstorm and not get his cuffs wet!
