Half of all US food produce is thrown away, new research suggests

Sunday, July 24, 2016

"Americans throw away almost as much food as they eat because of a "cult of perfection", deepening hunger and poverty, and inflicting a heavy toll on the environment.

Vast quantities of fresh produce grown in the US are left in the field to rot, fed to livestock or hauled directly from the field to landfill, because of unrealistic and unyielding cosmetic standards, according to official data and interviews with dozens of farmers, packers, truckers, researchers, campaigners and government officials."

"Globally, about one-third of food is wasted: 1.6bn tonnes of produce a year, with a value of about $1tn. If this wasted food were stacked in 20-cubic metre skips, it would fill 80m of them, enough to reach all the way to the moon, and encircle it once."

Went to a blood drive at a local church where they were also giving away fresh produce. A truckload of food going to waste. The people HANDING out the food were taking lots home and begging other people to take box fulls. Some people who needed the foods for their families did come by for food... but I was so surprised at the number of people who didn't want "fresh produce" because it spoils, they don't want to prep it, or "I won't eat that." reasons. Do you know what foods many people wanted? Canned, boxed, processed, and fast food. emoticon It's no wonder our nation is in such an unhealthy state.

Baby Carrots are made from the ugly normal size carrots - they are just shaved down.

Food City throws away ALL food that is beyond the 'labeled date' in their deli.... Most of the food is still perfectly fine - lettuce MIGHT have a SLIGHT brown edge to it. If an employee is caught giving it away or not trashing it, they are fired and charged with stealing.

I myself am guilty of throwing away produce... but I refuse to do it anymore. I simply buy frozen as much as possible and if the produce is going to go bad, I'll freeze it myself. I hate wasting the food.... Makes me feel awful and those companies that trash food because it isn't all pretty should be VERY ashamed!
